I know that it's cliche to say, but it at least made sense in the book. Had Irulan been anybody other than the daughter of the Emperor, Paul would have been fine with her. Instead, he made her life miserable just to stick it to her father. Her line dies out, the Atreides line lives on through Chani, Paul gets everything and everybody else can choke on it.
