If you did not think The Empire Strikes Back is a terrific film, then you should probably skip Return of the Jedi because it's definitely the weakest of the original three films.

Every artist has to follow their instincts, and Rian just had bad ones. Or at least confusing ones. The thing that I always come back to when I think about the Last Jedi is this question: what does Rian Johnson LIKE about Star Wars?

Yeah, that's the point though. The Kanto Bright shit is Johnson ticking off the 'meaningful theme' box and then getting on with the rest of the story. It doesn't mesh wish any other part of the story because he doesn't really care about the theme and never considered the theme as being part of the entire story.
Same with Rose's brain dead "we have to save the ones we love" bit right after she stops him from saving the resistance from being blasted with a massive cannon. There's zero thought put into making the story and scenes coherent, just ticking boxes and filming "moments" snyder style.

I love that even slowed down through a minute you get a feeling for how perfectly paced the movie is. Of the first 16 seconds, roughly a quarter, half is character building, and half is battle. That's followed by the two groups of characters having their own scenes, with Han's being another exciting action sequence taking a second and Luke's being another character/world sequence taking a second. It's impeccable.
