Because TBS just decided to start running it every year and the corporate brainwashed zealots picked it up as a holiday ritual. My family has always considered it a classic though because my grandparents grew up in the same area it takes place in. It's eerie how the mom sounds identical to all the older women in my family.

The kid with the big jacket falling down and not being able to get up while he screams on the ground and writhes for what feel like a minute, the pink bunny costume, the Santa Claus thing with the slide, the way his mother overreacts to hearing that he said “fuck”, etc. It’s just a weird movie.

It lost a bit of its appeal for me when it became a meme family xmas movie. When it first came out, critics thought it was actually too mean-spirited. It was sort of the Bad Santa of its time. Now it's a reddit zoomer classic. Ugh.
