The drop in quality season wise was a lot less noticeable than people like to admit. Simpsons had some serious duds in season 10 and 9 but so did season 3 and 4 in my opinion. Where Simpsons finally shit the bed without redemption was when the Lady Gaga episode released.

Used to watch every Sunday when I was a kid. For me the turning point was the episode with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. I didn't know who these people were and, unlike previous celeb appearances, they REALLY leaned on them and I just didn't get the whole thing. A great example of how to use a celeb was Krusty Gets Cancelled. Each only got a little screen time and had a joke that was funny even if you didn't know them.
After that they began to inject more and more celebs and it got unbearable. Futurama also had this issue. Who gives a fuck about Lucy Liu today? And we're supposed to believe they still celebrate her in the year 3000?
