How many times did the show expose the mobster cliches as being nothing more than Hollywood schlock. Even when they themselves believed it, when it came time to emulate their heroes the characters would often back down when it involved a sacrifice on their part.

Phil constantly bitched about the time he did because so many others refused to do the time. Phil did it because that's what mobsters are supposed to do, but very few others in the show were willing to walk that path and make that sacrifice.

yeah, the show was to highlight that the golden days of the mob were over. all anyone cared about was their money and would flip in an instant

A lot of the show is about the old era 'noble' mobsters being a thing of the past and the new generation having no values or ethics. We can see this almost immediately with the old guys wearing suits and the youngers guys wearing sweats. The old era was most likely a romanticized rose tinted nostalgia further reinforced by movies representing mobsters.
