Episodes 25 and 26 are probably the most intellectually dense works of art created by man. VERY introspective and cinematically delectable, with a trumulent dash of pathos and comment on the human condition.

Fanservice spam
Shinji's character resets every episode, which makes it look like there are multiple writers not working with each other or if they are, they all get amnesia together eg: Toji teaches Shinji how to be a man, then he lets himself get cucked by Rei in the very next episode; Shinji dabs on Asuka when she's introduced and then the next episode acts beta towards her
Plot conveniences always happen each episode as soon as they're brought up: eg Asuka gets introduced and then SUDDENLY they need to do a 2-person mission, Asuka points out that they're just waiting for attacks instead of actively looking for the angels, and then SUDDENLY they find one to attack preemptively.
Gendo's plans, despite being retarded and luck-based, always work until the plot doesn't want them to anymore. He doesn't have backup plans, and could have easily emotionally manipulated Shinji by offering him praise.

This is all just from the top of my head, without my notes. I'll have a more detailed analysis at some point since this is a show that definitely needs to be taken down a notch. I'll probably do the same to Avatar the Last Airbender too.

I made a subtle error here, but I'd like to point out that pretentiousness can have various degrees. Watchmen is pretentious to a higher degree, but Evangelion does have some pretentiousness (even moreso if you're talking about the fan interpretation of it).
A work, and its author, are pretentious when they believe it to be of higher quality or higher worth than it really is. Subversive works have a very high chance of being pretentious because the author usually believes his insight is something beyond what an average person could conjure up.
In Evangelion's case, a few aspects of the show could be considered pretentious. I don't have my notes with me, so the example I can remember is the so-called "Hedgehog's dilemma" in which the fear of proximity comes from the fact that the closer you are to someone, the easier it is to harm that person. What should be seen as something obvious is instead presented as a grand epiphany by the show. Some of the parts showing its subversive nature could be deemed pretentious as well. "It insists upon itself."

My error was to conflate the work itself with the audience interpretation of the work. It is pretentious in itself, but not as much. For example, the religious symbols being given extra interpretation by the audience adds another layer of pretentiousness to the work which was not intended by the author, as he only added them because they're cool. If taken as a cool mecha anime with a couple of things going wrong, it wouldn't be so bad. Unfortunately the audience keeps acting like it's something more than it is. The one thing I did think was a good idea was the attempt to get Japanese people to get out more and make relationships with people, despite the risk. The intent fell flat when Anno sold out and now instead actively participating in the "problem" because he likes money.
I have to admit, sometimes pretentiousness is just a feeling and it's hard to point out exactly which parts or how it's pretentious.

I watched the first 20 episodes on Netflix then pirated the next fours director cuts. Then watched EoE, which is now probably my third favorite movie. Is anything else worth watching? The first 20 episodes were pretty annoying to sit though at times for me atleast. Also. On a side not the new dub is superior from what I can tell from those 4 episodes. Gendo is also fucking hilarious to watch he's like the best part of the show
