How the fuck was this not a major box office success?
>Adapted from a ridiculously popular book series that seemingly fucking everyone had read or knew about >James Bond actor at his peak when people were excited about the franchise >Prestigious and well known director >Dynamite marketing campaign
What the fuck happened? Should have been a $500 million gross easy. This movie underperforming put the good Steve Jobs movie into limbo to the point when it was released no one cared.
women love sex and murder stories, but not from some unknown nordic country
Bentley Morales
Who knows. People are retarded. Maybe it was just at the wrong time even.
Matthew Nguyen
But women ravenously read the books. Seriously, this not being popular makes no sense to me.
Yeah, probably. The original Swedish version is like an okay tv movie with a really good performance but this is a fucking fantastic mystery thriller. Legitimately very good. Can not understand it failing at all.
Mason Richardson
>>No cute Rooney to snuggle and play legos with :(
the James Bond actor wasn't the main character though? It was some butch looking rape victim. The marketing campaign also leaned a bit edgy, definitely didn't appeal to 15 year old girls. It targeted 27 year old feminists who don't actually buy anything. Lost the male demographic too.
Colton Robinson
Because nobody's interested in some edgelord movie based on a terrible novel written by a deranged Swedish communist.
Juan Rogers
It always surprises me that Yea Forums doesn't remember or even know how shitty Sony is and how Fincher got fucked off with them and how that all led to the clusterfuck that made this movie a shadow of what is really should have been
But that didn't happen. Sony did actually allow him a lot of freedom on he film, including marketing decisions, based on his past success. The clamps only came out after this movie underperformed. The Sony hack emails that detail the squabbling over this movie that breakdown and lead to Fincher walking away over a shortfall of $5 million on his budget were amongst the best of the stuff revealed.
Charles Taylor
>red bruised ass DOMINATED
Henry Kelly
>let's watch a women get raped literally all the advertisements were about that
Nolan Sanchez
You're right about the marketing. The trailer's were very unusual. The teaser with no dialog but fantasticly cut and then the 8 minute long trailer. They also put behind the scenes pics on tumblr mouth-taped-shut-blog-blog.tumblr.com/ and collabed with swedish clothes maker H&M for the edgy girls clothes. mouth-taped-shut-blog-blog.tumblr.com/ Feels like Fincher hasn't tried as hard after this.
Jace Allen
>Feels like Fincher hasn't tried as hard after this. For a perfectionist like him it would probably be pretty hard to not take it personally, not to mention it made his trusted studio partner treat him like some first time director after it.
Just rewatched the teaser again. Absolute KINO. I think he negotiated full creative control on the marketing and is responsible for the "feel bad movie of christmas" line. It's a shame it didn't work because I want to see more.
Cameron Morris
Why won't Rooney do this to MEEEEEEEE?!
Brandon Bennett
It flopped because the main chick was kind of a tranny lookin chick who was frankly pretty unlikable.
Thomas Bailey
Roon in pantyhose and with pixie cut. Best scene in film.
Angel Jackson
People already saw the original. Also murricans can't understand movies that aren't set in america
Nathaniel Scott
>People already saw the original. You reckon? It's remarkable how many people avoid subtitled films, particularly Americans.
>being allowed hot drinks in a kinoplex do you know how I know you are a shutin that never goes places?
Aiden Stewart
I'll defend that this is the best mystery/thriller movie released in the last 10-15 years or so... possibly of the 2000s. The only other one I can think of is the Ghost Writer. But to your point, I think the rape is hard to sell. I remember when it was still in theaters people were referring as "oh, that one movie with the brutal rape scene?" I think that reputation intuitively turns off the common viewer and might have scared people away.
Charles Campbell
Does your cinema legitimately not let you taken in coffee?
Michael Adams
>soijack poster is an iphone fag makes sense you would be a zoomer.
Ethan Garcia
>How the fuck was this not a major box office success?
Because the main actress was not attractive. She was uglier than the original girl. Couldn't buy the sexual tension or whatever between her and Daniel Craig.
Other than that, it was very stylish and well shot. They should've picked someone else for the female lead.
Isaiah Myers
>30 million copies of the book sold >no one will watch the rape they're aware of Maybe. I don't think so though. That ass eating rape scene is honestly the sort of shit that spreads word mouth so I doubt it's the reason for it failing.
Matthew Fisher
IT flopped because a large number of people had seen the Noomi Rapace version, and its sequels already. The people who had already seen the Swedish version were the die hards, and were annoyed at a remake of a film that had just been made. These would have been the people who would have dragged a few friends each to see the American version, if the Swedish version didn’t exist. But makng an English language version only a few years after the Swedish language version just pissed off the people who really liked the Swedish version.
Yeah didn't she also make Tomb Raider bomb for the same exact reason too?
Gavin Davis
But this ignores the fact that it was an immensely popular book that sold 15 million copies in the US alone and the original Swedish version literally made only $10k from its US release. No one saw it so it doesn't make sense that people wouldn't go see the remake of a film they didn't see or weren't even aware existed.
Noah Fisher
*$10m
Luke Moore
the issue for me is noomi's version isnt bad, but the remake is way better. Its like when andrew garfield became spoderman but tom holland's was better so we all saw that. I think theres an underlying tension into making the remake american english.
Easton Diaz
umm because of the rape scene?! Who wants to watch a movie gloryfying rape?
Nathaniel Davis
Look, Rooney isn't unattractive - but they went out of their way to make her look weird and off putting. Congratulations, they succeeded. They were so successful I don't want to watch this thing onscreen for 2 hours. Or watch her in some kind of homeless person love story.
It's a reasonable assumption that that an extremely popular book adaptation earns more than it did.
Grayson Long
"in a large forensic hospital"
sure bud
Juan Taylor
no he's not it's a marketing gimmick and a deliberate attempt to emulate kubrick to appeal to numales without understanding the point of doing that many takes fincher is the definition of a hack
Angel Hughes
>ass eating rape scene is honestly the sort of shit that spreads word mouth all that inuendo and word play
it made 400m worldwide. was pretty popular for a hard R movie.
Chase Watson
they made her ugly instead of a waifu and it looks grim and boring
Christian Reyes
>be me >working at Blockbuster >told to watch all the latest releases and catch up with the backcat >see customer holding a copy of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo >go over and tell her it's really good, I've watched it twice now >"oh, what happens?" >look at cover again >mind goes blank >it's, uh, it's... >"well, does it have subtitles?" >yeah, I think... >awkward silence while I just stare at the back of the DVD box >brain is completely broken now >customer walks off >this happened 10 years ago >still keeps me up at night
The Swedish version was on Netflix, and maybe other streaming sites as well. You didn’t have to go to the theater to see it.
John Rivera
Fincher CGI’d the blood in scenes, because having to clean too much blood off actors takes too much time and limits the number of takes you can film.
Jack Russell
When did (((Netflix))) pick it up?
Nathaniel Scott
I don’t recall, but I watched it on a streaming site months or more before the Fincher version was out, or maybe being made, and I’m sure I was watching it legally.
Caleb Nelson
That motorcycle was very pretty
Carter Kelly
is the US version better than the European version? The EU trilogy came first and I really liked it and watched it like 3 times. Does the US version have the exact same story and characters?
2 hour 40min runtime. add trailers and you have a 3+hour film, add to that its a lot of dialogue and not a film you can "turn your brain off".
Hard R rating. 2 rape scenes with one being graphic. had people in my audience stand up and leave at the 2nd one. add to that some realistic violence and the "mom" audience is out.
Marketed as the "Feel Bad Movie of Christmas" most people dont wanna feel like shit when seeing a christmas time film.
i personally love the film, but i can easily see why it failed.
Christopher Sanchez
Because the Noomi Rapace ones were dubbed and released in the US.
The swedish ones aired on American Cable, too. Trilogy came out back 2 back.
> better lead actress
Everyone who wanted to watch the novels adapted already watched the 3 Swedish movies.
here in Europe nobody watched it because everyone already saw the Swedish original
Gabriel Bailey
>is the US version better than the European version? Significantly.
Gavin Allen
I remember watching the trilogy but I don't remember if it was cable or Netflix.
This could be the movie series that inspired Netflix to make movies... could be. I remember some site raving about this trilogy and then watching it based on some online recommendation.
Was it Hulu?
Carter Garcia
No.
American version has higher production values but the Swedish one is more popular.
The American one didn't do well enough to merit a sequel right away. The sequel was done years later with Claire Foy and it bombed.
It was a success. Rated R movies just aren't the box office smashes they used to be.
Sebastian Garcia
It was pretty successful,I think the real downfall was how high it's budget was. For being a pretty standard thriller it had an insanely high budget from what I can remember
Noah Cruz
>tfw this will never happen to you >why live
Benjamin Garcia
I just watched this and holy shit that's got to be one of the best films I've ever watched
Jayden Martin
Should have yelled ASS SNACK bro
Carter Sanchez
you are delusional, go have sex. The Roon is miles more attractive than the Noom
Christian Parker
It's literally GOAT. Too bad the sequels didn't get made, the book sequels are really good too. Shame Fincher couldn't finish it.
I don't understand if they can't fund a new film why they can't then at least with a lower budget finish it as an HBO series though.
Michael Campbell
Anyone who prefers the Swedish films is a cuck. God those are fucking awful.
Easton Peterson
It was really long and slow, and it all led into a bad guy you didn't really know or care about that much. I like the movie but for a normal audience they would have been fine with being 90-100 minutes. People don't like 2.5 hour long movies unless they have superheroes in them now.
Oliver Nelson
Cause the original film adaptation came out, what? 3 years earlier? No one asked for Finchers version even though it was good.
