But it's kind of a happy end. Coffey wanted to die, because he couldn't bare all the evil and bad energy in the world anymore. He wanted peace, and he finally got it. The director's wife was healed by him, Tom Hanks was healed by him, the evil guys were punished, and the mouse was made almost immortal.
It's a real bittersweet ending
