Just watched Martyrs (2008) and its really fucked up. They peel that bitches skin off at the end haha. Is it interesting to wonder what the girl saw though huh? And she didn't murder the people who are really responsible for hurting her. She killed flunkies, but at least she got a peek behind the curtain at why her suffering existed. It served a higher purpose. They even told her she was the first to reach the last stage, even though she was the fourth. It was like the only time they considered her feelings.

Martyrs is vastly overrated. The real French horror kino is and always was A L'interieur which sadly got an unbelievably gay US remake btw.

The OA is (was) much better.

Probably. In the end everything takes place in order to find the transcendental beyond, but I always thought that "the other side" gave her information that gives peace to those who suffer and reveals an unsustainable truth for those who hurt it and is the reason behind the suicide at the end of the film. As the saying goes, "Art calms the disturbed and disturbs the calm". And even though I think that French extremism and Viennese actionism reveal part of the reality that we as civilized people in controlled realities we are not able to know, I am not a fan of either movement.

I think the insane death related experiments on kids already point to her being a bit unhinged and fearful but whatever man the ending is up to interpretation.

Once you get over the initial shock factor there's really not much to it. You could read some flimsy meaning about a fear aging and how people react to that, or a very nihlistic take would be one about how terrifying the inevitability of death is. But really I think it was just an excuse for some Frog to play the enfant terrible and upset the squares.

A good horror movie must be read in both ways, is the visual and the symbolic, so that interpretation is also valid.

The movie was boring, but I'd really like to torture a pretty girl like this one day.

I think the ending was left ambiguous because the author didn't know how to end it.
I thought it was a bit annoying at first, but with reflection I think it is a good ending.
We didn't hear the answer. Which is the best way to explain life after death, instead of telling us the truth of existence, we got what we already knew. That we don't know. No one knows. And we can't find out.
So yea, a horror movie that actually made me think for a second, instantly a tier above the rest.

It's not remotely scary, no. It's unpleasant, but so's stepping in dog shit. No one thinks the neighbourhood labradoodle should get an award.

I'm not saying it's not "valid", you can read what you want into any piece of art, rightly or wrongly, nor do I think symbolic meaning is even that important to a film. However, Matyrs doesn't frighten or divulge a greater meaning. It's the cinematic equivelent of dropping a big metal pan on the floor. It makes an awfully loud noise, but the pan's fine, the floor's fine and for all intents and purposes nothing has happened.

And Annilhilation is obvs about all the different ways trauma can effect people, but that inevitably it will change you, no matter how hard you try to act otherwise. imo anyway.

The only good thing about this movie is watching Xavier Dolan get blown to pieces with a double-barreled.

The movie stinks but it’s pretty good at tricking plebs, none of the cultists behave like humans and it’s so high concept that people can just take the over dramatic to the point of goofy concepts and themes (like the retarded suicide) and still consider it a good movie via pure face value.
