I'm rewatching it for the first time in a long time now and for some reason Sokka greedily munching on these snacks then offering some to Aang with this very exaggerated "HMMM?" cracked me up. His voice actor can make some ridiculous sounds.

Whilst I don't agree, though it is certainly a great show, I'd make the case that the reason you found it so much more enjoyable than regular anime was that this was made in the west.

People underestimate how much culture shock can put people off stuff. And anime can have a lot of culture shock, not just in weird pervert shit but in terms of comical timing, language based puns, and general dramatic pacing. It's all fairly different.

That's why things like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece are seen as gateways. Naruto and Bleach both play into their Japanese inspirations and settings whilst also being fairly straightforward or bland, whereas One Piece is clearly heavily western inspired despite being out and out weirder than the other two. Once you're inoculated with a gateway shonen you tend to be able to drift into the "more Japanese" shit with less resistance.

In a way I bet a lot of people used Avatar as a gateway to the gateway anime's.

tl;dr: It was made by western cunts, which is what you are so it didn't make you cringe as hard with it's weird weeb shit, because it didn't have any. Shabbadabbado.

Avatar had a few heavy handed moments, yes, but the exposition was low. The "What happened last episode" montages were usually the only exposition to an episode.

Over the top dialogue can be fun. Saiki K for example is like a Sorkin show, but as an anime. It's over the top, quick, but it isn't heavy in exposition.

TL;DR exposition ruins 99% of anime by treating their audiences like cattle
when a show like Avatar made for 12 year olds treats its audience intelligence better than a show made for "mature adults" it shows the differences in culture and in how stories are told

I think Gundam 0079 is very underrated in that regard. It has one of the most brilliant world buildings in any TV shows. We learn about the world and Gundam's universe through the main characters, but not at any point it is heavy-handed.

The only info dump we get is that

>There are space colonies
>Some have rebelled for independence against Earth
That's it. Then we learn about insides of those two factions through main characters (Amuro and White Base for Earth Federation who we very quickly learn aren't nice guys at all and Char with Zeon who has his own Shakespearean drama going on).

I honestly think Tomino fucking blew it when he treated Zeta completely opposite to 0079 especially in that regard. I still like Zeta, but 0079 isn't just a lightning in a bottle, it's a Big Bang in a bottle that created Gundam franchise for a good fucking reason besides the toys.

Not big into Gundam, but it's actually a relatively fleshed out and consistent universe it could be amazing.

So much anime relies on constant power creep and exposition or otaku-clad fanservice. I get it's a big business, but fuck sake there must be some niche anime out there still appealing to the more mystique/built world audience.

i never minded it but i can see where people are coming from. energy bending and turtle lion really come out of nowhere, a pretty undeserved deus ex machina. him not wanting to kill ozai is a big central conflict for his character and he kind of gets a free pass even if he does sweat over it for a while.
if the turtle lion had been alluded to more in the past and the energy bending was more earned I don't think anyone would mind

Aang was faced with a very important moral dilemma but was given the perfect solution out of nowhere with no costs at all, killing any meaningful character development.

Giant blue Korra was stupid as well but it was a means to an end and not the perfect solution.

Great concept but ruined by the terrible pacing of it's drama. It's like the creators wanted to make a series as long as One Piece but lacked any kind of real storytelling creativity and spend a episodes length on a single scene of story telling that should be more concisely delivered.
