What midichlorians are is a limiting factor that was necessary for the world of the prequels. In the OT, the Jedi were hunted and knowledge of the force was suppressed by the Empire. This is enough explanation to why only certain special people get to use the force.
In a setting where Knowledge of the force is not suppressed, and the Jedi are out in the open for all to see, you instantly run into the problem of "why doesn't everyone just use the force?". Your average solider? Give them force training. Some manual labourer who needs to lift heavy things? Give him force training.

The sequel trilogy keeps very basic elements from Lucas i.e.:

1. Female lead
2. Brother and sister split up (Kylo's original name was Skyler)
3. Luke in exile.

Luke exiled and female lead is not why "fans" hate the Sequel Trilogy. It's Disney's behaviour and portrayal of the characters.
