Why are the 2nd and 3rd books so disappointing?
You get introduced to this amazing world full of cool shit and a genuinely clever heroine. By the end of book 1 you are gagging to find out more about this world and this girl's adventures, but then.... Cut to some twat boy in boring modern day earth who calls his mom "mother" and cut to yet another fantasy world which devalues the world of the first story.

It was definitely by design. The first is a more recognizable YA fantasy world to draw you in and then he pulls the rug out with the second and third and introduces headier themes. It doesn't work, but it was intentional.
