The problem I'm talking about is how it's basically "blank space" between ROTJ and whatever they've cobbled together around the films, which are clearly made with little thought for how it fits into a canonical timeline.

I can tell you at least 75% of the background characters will be human, 15% will be the shitty Disney muppet aliens and 10% will be classic aliens

Best case Favreau is involved enough in ep9 to prevent another disaster. And after the show proves there is no Star Wars fatigue, D&D get pushed aside and capable filmmakers are brought in to create new films without a hiatus.
