It's really not nonsensical, it's just contrived. The audience knows that Superman is nigh invincible, because he's been around for 100 years. But, Pa Kent doesn't know that; he just knows that Clark's really strong. Superman doesn't test the limits of his abilities until quite a while later in his life. So in Pa Kent's mind there are two possible outcomes:
>Clark tries to save him, only to die trying
>Clark successfully saves him, revealing his powers and taking away his ability to choose what kind of life he wants to live
It's a no win situation.
