Why does March Madness keep becoming more and more irrelevant every year?

Most events aren't special anymore, I'm pretty sure it has to do with depressed wages and people's material conditions getting worse while billionaires get richer.

Some people are still jaded from the BLM/Woke/Liberal bullshit that's corrupted every major sport across the world in the past decade (but most especially in 2020-21). These people probably realized they no longer have a connection to nor feel represented by the team they used to be a fan of and haven't tuned back in since.

Because people are realizing college basketball in completely unwatchable trash. I mean look, the NBA is the most abhorrent sports league on the planet, but I try to watch some March Madness CBB games and the games are torture to watch. The gameplay is terrible, the constant fouling, the constant delays, the last minute takes 15-20 min with all the fouls and reviews and missed shots and turnovers.

I'm starting to get the idea that basketball as a whole is just a horrific sport to watch. Maybe FIBA European basketball is better but no way am I watching that either.

How can you not miss SOVL?

This, if you’re anything other than a casual fan there’s no reason to watch college ball over the NBA. The quality is shit, even in just the last five seconds of this game we had a guy grab a rebound then throw at his teammates feet, then the other team walked out of bounds and immediately turned it over

Yeah I turned on this game in the last few minutes and basically the entire sequence showed why I don't watch this crap. The chucking up threes with 20 seconds left on the clock and immediately running out of bounds were the icing on the cake

I just don't care when it's Kansas, UNC, Duke, Kentucky, etc. Those same teams winning all the time with 1-and-dones makes it not feel like college basketball anymore. It's way more fun to see random schools get a once-in-a-generation chance at a title. The final four with Auburn, Texa Tech, Virginia is great, this year's is blah

I loved the final four because it was sports I could watch without having cable. To answer the question though, I think sports in general are becoming more irrelevant. They say viewership is increasing but I honestly think they're fucking with the numbers because I don't know that many people who even watch sports anymore. I've posted this theory before, but I truly believe the last true legacy sports game that was played was whatever super the Chiefs/49ers was. It was the last even before lockdown and the last one pure of everything that came after. After the Coronavirus everything seems different just slightly and no one seems as passionate as they once were. Oh well

Basketball is unironically the worst sport for one simple reason - there can be strategy with fouling. In every other sport, commiting a penalty is an objectively bad thing that harms your team. In basketball, fouling is only punished by the other team shooting free throws. Only a mere "chance" that your team suffers, and with shooting so bad in college it's not even that risky. Basketball needs to implement hockey's penalty box for fouls or limit it to like 3 fouls from a player gets you ejected or something. The current formula actually rewards fouling to an extent because players can keep doing it with little consequence, as you don't even GET free throws for a while, and then choosing who and when to foul drags the game out and encourages meme strategies that rarely work and extend game length.

Fix fouls, fix basketbore. Although even then, it's such a repetitive and empty game. Maybe it's just inherently shitty.

Because you get further from the culture where it’s relevant. Once you’re out of college there’s no aspiration to roof for a college and unless you went to UCLA or Michigan odds are your school either was only okay academically or athletically and there’s no pride in watching and donating to that.

I think it's the opposite. Things are overall so good (coof notwithstanding) nothing seems special. I have more monitors in my room than my dad had tvs in his house growing up. Not to mention cohesion is gone. I remember in school how cool it was to get into a classroom and the male teachers would usually have the opening day of the tournament quietly on the tv and there would usually be some discussion about brackets etc. Now everyone is so siloed you don't see that any more. Partially because nothing can be enjoyable, eventually someone will have a problem with something and shit all over it
