Just watched the original King Kong vs Godzilla (American Cut) today, unironically a pretty fun film. I especially like the Goji suit in this film, looks way more reptilian-like, probably my favorite suit after the 54 suit.

Gojira 54 is a more ambitious movie, but that also means it lacks the timelessness of Kong. Yes, the acting in '33 is campy, and the monsters are just stop motion, but the movie itself has a fairy tale quality that elevates it to something bigger than just a movie. Godzilla 54 doesn't reach this height so as a result its judged in comparison to other serious movies, and while it has good cinematography, it doesn't have the best, and as far as acting goes its nowhere near notable. Godzilla himself is the only truly breakout thing about 54. All these things you find better are only notable in relativity to it being a monster movie, if you saw a . movie with the same level of acting, the same cinematography, as Gojira, you wouldn't note it as being particularly good.

In what fucking world has Kong aged better? That movie was literally the embodiment of the words "product of it's time". Gojira's message is timeless and still relevant today

The message of the film is irrelevant to the quality of the movie. King Kong is bigger than the sum of its parts. Yes, there are better written monster movies, and special effects have gotten better, but thats not the point. It sets out to create a modern age myth and it works within those parameters. The stilted acting only works in its favor because its not meant to be any deeper than a fairy tale. No one will ever compare it to Citizen Kane for its writing, but both are equally important, and Kong wasn't trying to have a deep story. It succeeds at exactly what it wants to be. Gojira is a B-movie with heart, but still a b-movie. Its why I prefer the later Showa stuff, those know exactly what they set out to be and work in that regard.
