Gentle doesn't mean lazy. Slow hitting takes plenty of effort too.
1- Active feet, take at least three or four steps for each ball even if they're prissy little Norrie steps.
2- Don't wait on the ball, always try to step in on it. You want to be either hitting it at the peak of its trajectory or just before it. Whenever I slump in quality of ball striking I tell myself I'm going to start hitting the ball earlier and it usually works. You might think this leads to overhitting and creating too pacy a ball but that hasn't been the case in my experience.
3- Don't get vision lazy either, eyes down on the ball at contact. Experiment with fixing your gaze on the estimated contact point and seeing the ball come in "across" your vision too.
4- And of course have a consistent prep, find a comfortable and simple way to index the racquet to a known position before beginning the stroke.
In terms of importance for me it's 2,1,3,4 as I find prep becomes automatic when I'm doing 2 and 1 well.

What's the best way to pick up Tennis as an adult?
My parents were to poor/cheap so I had to play football.
Now I'm 23 and finally earn enough money on my own.
Already checked and there are 2 clubs near me. Both about 400€/year.
But how should I begin, are there usually beginner adult classes or do I have to hire a private coach?
Also how easy is it to find playing partners in a club, especially at my age and level?
Experiences and tips about gear are appreciated.

i am 23 as well and just started recently after not playing for 15 years since being a kid. i joined a local club and they had a few coaches that i could get in touch through them to get back into it. clubs should offer both 1 to 1 coaching or group session at different skill levels.

most people at the club were seniors who just love playing doubles but you can get in touch with any youngish people there and then book courts to play with outside of the club social sessions

I'd recommend getting private lessons with a pro at ur local club. First time I picked up a racket was in May of last year during my first lesson, and now I play D3 tennis for my college. Individual instruction pays off MASSIVELY.

Most clubs offer package deals where you can get a like cluster of 8 lessons for ~$400 (~365 euros), and you save money as opposed to paying for the lessons individually. It's a big upfront payment, I realize, but if you wanna see results it's pretty much the only way forward.
