I love the movie but during its release, it was critically panned and it didn't make money. Also Jim Carrey's salary cost almost half of the budget. I think The Cable Guy was what made Carrey to look for more serious roles like The Truman Show because some people thought back then that The Cable Guy's box office bomb mean that the audience was getting tired of Carrey's antics and he needed to get some prestige back, and what's better than a role that will give him an Oscar (except it didn't)
