Unfortunately it didn't work because the Chinese and the Soviets were funnelling supplies into North Vietnam and communists have zero regard for loss of life so they were perfectly fine with taking estimated losses of over one million people. In the end, we did end up forcing North Vietnam to sign a peace treaty with South Vietnam and pulled out afterwards. Obviously, communists being communists, they immediately violated the peace treaty and invaded again. When South Vietnam asked for US assistance again, we told them to fuck off and they are on their own.
