Gotta reach those recruitment targets somehow. This is what happens when you let politicians run a war, in WW2 the political class stayed well back and let their military run the show, whereas in Vietnam the whole thing was being micromanaged by Washington.

Pvt. Pyle was just fat and bullied by peer pressure, he outperformed everybody else in terms of marksmanship and obedience. But the damage was already done and he finally he snapped. He was trained to kill and he did. The army DOES condition you to be a psychopath, but they want to control it and only see it at the enemy. But through the mass bullying the army itself became his enemy and he lashed out. He would have gotten a medal shooting in name, but a "crime" shooting his drill instructor folow by suicide. Nevermind that a lot of the nam vets also became alcoholics and committed suicide later.
Since the conditioning revolution following BF Skinner and on, you get more deadly soldiers who can override their natural killing inhibition through conditioning. If it goes wrong, you see what happens in Pyle.
