we're not going to have any pitchers by opening day

well if he had to leave i'm happy he's back with Bo mel

I'm so confused if there isn't a corresponding move. They spent all the offseason dancing around the first CBT bracket just to nudge past it at the end of spring training? For a pitcher when they're overflowing with pitching and still have huge holes in the OF and INF?

alright boys, it's about that time
> (You)r team
> most optimistic win total
> win total you're expecting

Chris Paddack long relief, Snell + Clevinger probably gonna be piggybacking for at least a few starts.

Imagine being Montas on that team lol

he won't be there much longer, either.

Where's he going?

i don't know, but i imagine he isn't there any later than the trade deadline

they're definitely keeping him until the deadline to drive up value for desperate teams

Angeles is kind of good, extremely rushed comp is he might be like a Cronenworth type where he doesn't have any dreamy tools but produces above-average level. But he's also Rule V and buried in SD's MI picture. Martinez is an org guy and I'd doubt he'd see any time in the rotation unless something terrible happened, but it's tla little disconcerting SD is still trading SP depth when 3 of their options are leaving this year (potentially 4 if Martinez opts out) and 2 more after 2023.

How did my berds not match this

Rockies bros, this is OUR fucking year!

Sorry but YOUR fucking year was 15 years ago

I don't think it's a good move by the Pads. either. I think 6 years of team control of Martinez alone is way more valuable in the near term, let alone long term, than paying Manea 10 million for 1 season. This is just the latest example to me of Preller always trying to win it all yesterday without looking beyond the end of his nose into the future.

>ROCKTOBER was 25 years ago

i think the padres are in win now mode period. they have to do everything to keep pace within the division. marginal wins are more important to teams in their position.

With Gary Sanchez?

up your rectum

Gary with 45 bombs now that the pressure is off, im calling it

can't wait for them to miss the postseason again

I don't have an issue pushing chips in - you're already deep and the roster still has a lot of holes. My issue is trading SP guys, even if they profile as 4/5 types. Angeles is the better prospect but Padres have incredible MI depth so it's not so painful. They're gonna lose 5-6 of their SP to FA in the next 2 years, which means the roster profiles as something like Gore/Morejon/Paddack/Martinez if he doesn't opt out(which likely means he's not pitching well) and that's it.Already Patiño is looking like a better option than Snell - but I always thought Snell was overrated. So if Manaea was a value play it's the area of your roster where you least needed upgrades and if it's a reaction to Clevinger possibly going to the IL you currently have 5 SP + org guys who are ready to start without any current inning restrictions + Snell being built back up. It's not a bad trade in a vacuum but it's absolutely not what the team needs rn unless there's corresponding moves.

How are my Yankees doing?

I'm expecting it, the OF depth is fucking nonexistant. Preller can't even learn from his mistakes from last year.

they could re-sign their pitchers, they could sign ones from outside the organization, they could try to draft more pro-ready college pitchers like the royals have been doing in recent years

I think the only guy they'd want to resign is Musgrove and if he has another good year I don't know why he wouldn't test FA unless he's happy passing up some money to live/work at home. It's looking rough rn in 2024 is all I'm saying.

Padres best case is the wildcard and with tatis out half a season you can kiss that goodbye.

Gonna miss him but I am glad he's retiring at home.

Attached: 1634818215278.jpg (1200x800, 103.56K)

Thry lost their best player but it's from their deepest area of the ML roster. There's a chance if Kim can get close to league-average with the bat and Abrams can handle himself at the ML level that they can weather Tatis' loss for 3 months. If Grisham goes down they are absolutely fucked however.

I thought the Snell trade was a horrible decision and the Clevinger deal wasn't any better. I think they should have given the team a chance to "marinate" and use lower cost short term free agent pitching while waiting for their own potential high impact org. guys to replace them. Now the system is gutted and you can't even depend on Snell to give you 5 innings a start or what Clev can bring. Meanwhile, it feels like Gore figuring it out has become critical where it used to look like he was a luxury for the team to have.

I realize it’s almost opening day so you’re high on copium right now so i’ll let it slide.

The Giants are the team to beat for the Padres not the Dodgers.

that was a "neutral" 3rd party opinion

Yeah sure okay.

Attached: 1627614216933.png (704x836, 928.72K)

Not memeing here but what makes you think the giants will repeat their 111 division winning performance this year?

What tells you the Poodres will even sniff a WC spot?

Tatis Jr isn't out the whole season you know?

Clevinger was a bit more defensible IMO coming off two really good seasons even with the ankle injury in 2019. He didn't seem injury-prone to me but clearly that seems to be the case now. Plus the only piece the Padres are missing is Quantrill. Snell was an immediate trade where I was almost certain the Padres were gonna lose in the short and long term.

The system being gutted (it's more top-end now but the depth is bad) isn't even as huge of an issue to me as the fact that they've built up the budget so fast they can't or won't float long-term signings to their current cheap pieces and it's inhibited their ability to pivot around bad contracts like Hosmer. So guys like Cronenworth or Grisham who you should be trying to dangle guaranteed money while their far from arbitration to get some cheaper FA years are now going to walk or need to have the pot sweetened.

Until he decides to go hang gliding like a retard.

Giants even with correction are around a 90-win team, their depth is ludicrous.

Attached: MV5BMjEwMTU3MDkzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzc2NjM5MQ@@._V1_UY1200_CR84,0,630,1200_AL_.jpg (630x1200, 38.48K)

I think ownership isn't willing to spend much more, if anything, seeing what the spending they've done so far has brought them. I can't help but look at the way the Giants have been doing shit-spending on short term rentals while waiting for the farm to start producing-and not feel angry that Preller didn't do something more similar. Idk if it's because the Padres can't spend regularly like the Dodgers and Giants can but the thought of what the potential core of Grish, Croneworth, Tatis, Abrams, Manny, etc with Patino, Gore, Morejon, etc not coming to pass and the window slamming shut because you created a flawed Frankenstein roster instead makes me ill in a way I'm not sure I will get over for a long time.

>t.

Attached: FKcna7iVkAAbgK8.jpg (779x900, 111.45K)

Yeah I've absorbed that and I'm over it. Preller bungled building up the roster for the 2nd time. He should've been gone after last season too.

grisham, cronenworth, tatis, abrams, manny, gore, morejon are all still in the organization.

Frankly I should've lost any hope in Preller after the Hosmer contract. Even Tatis was the result of a pickpocket lottery ticket off another bad signing (though not one as egregious as Hosmer). He cannot build a competitive roster, it's just a complete tank job or him flailing against the CBT while there are still massive roster holes.

I know. My concern was keeping as much of that core intact as could be possible and not losing guys you could have kept had you made better decisions building your roster along the way. As it stands, I doubt either Manny or Tatis are Padres when those contracts expire.

okay, but their contracts are a long way from expiring. manny has an opt-out, but i don't think it's a given he exercises it. but the myers contract is gone after this year, hosmer's salary drops by ~$8m.

Don't sleep on those O's

Doubt Manny opts out of 5/$150 at his current rate of production. Tatis who knows. Scared of the effects of all the breaks adding up at this point.

People are saying he's going to be "the next Ohtani." Is the hype warranted?

Attached: Seiya Suzuki.jpg (1400x1400, 251.31K)

i think manny is probably a borderline opt-out case. kind of a similar situation as arenado, though manny will be younger when he has to make the decision.

What I actually meant to say is that I won't be surprised to hear of the team trying to move them sooner rather than later in an attempt to reset again sometime in the coming years.

name one person saying that

Unless he has full-length seasons lime 2020 then maybe, but otherwise he's been a solid 4 WAR guy. Not a bad return on the contract but factor in age-related decline and I can't see him getting a higher AAV. Maybe he couls convince someone (even the Padres) to tack on an extra year or 2.

No way will anyone be interested in Tatis' contract until he can show at least a season of 600 PAs. I get the general frustration though. Lot of wasted opportunties by Preller.

who watches cable tv besides boomers? the reason they suck at broadcasting MLB is only because mlb.tv is shit with blackouts.

Outfielder Mitch Haniger and the Seattle Mariners are in agreement on a one-year, $7.75 million deal to avoid arbitration, sources familiar with the contract tell ESPN. The number is around what they agreed to right before the arb deadline, and the deal is now official.

Closer to Fukudome than Ohtani.

Yankees season DEAD ON ARRIVAL already. Red Sox will sweep them at their house.

Sure, that's why NFL and the NBA are consistently broadcasted, because nobody watches sports on cable. You must work for the MLB.

>consistently broadcasted
To boomers, look I get that you cant let it go because you're emotionally attached to it and you don't want to mess with streaming services but everyone I know in gen z has never owned cable tv and most millenials have canceled already.

Gen z doesn't own shit. Hell, a lot of millennials still live with their parents.

Their two sides of the same coin, dude. You can't neglect one for the other. The decline of cable is vastly overstated. Also, stop assuming and attacking me on a personal level. I do watch streams, I've been watching the majority of my baseball through streams for the better part of a decade, but the point of the matter is TV still matters and by not having any games televised on opening fucking day you are massively underselling the sport. The less you have something in the public eye the easier it is to ignore it. But go ahead and keep this asinine stance that only internet streaming matters and keep making baseless attacks on me if it makes you feel better. Burying your head in the sand is totally a fine strategy that will completely solve everything.

thanks to padres fans sharing their thoughts i feel a bit better about the Manea trade
I don't follow prospects much at all but the writers i checked out this morning were saying it's a light return
i hope he does well and embarrasses the giants

Why the apostrophes?

Why the attitude?

Apostrophe's poster... noooo

It's a solid pickup for 1 year IMO, Angeles is a young MI high-floor low-ceiling and Martinez could be a 5th starter/long relief. Padres depth is shot after the past 2 years but I think it's good value.

What’s “apostrophes poster”?

I agree

if the qualifying offer is no longer part of the equation, that can explain why a return may be lighter than expected

No one is gonna give good value for Soto. You're talking at least multiple top 100 prospects who are ML ready or guys with 5 years of control who have already established themselves as above-average major leaguers.

they still have him for 3 more seasons. if they can't get him extended they might trade him. they didn't with harper, but they were contending at the time.

>No one is gonna give good value for Soto.
He HAS good value because of his age and contract. That value decreases as he approaches FA not increases.

Attached: 1628185731078.jpg (289x309, 18.29K)

yes but they don't want to prematurely move him in the event they can get it turned around quickly

He's got 3 (including this year) years left. There's no way they're going to rebuild in that time. They failed to extend him so he should be moved for the best pitching package they can find.

We are 3/5ths of the way to nu though.

He has good value because of his team control. No one is going to pay what 3 years of his service is actually worth, it would clean out multiple top 100 prospects or young controllable guys who aren't schmucks. 2 years you can still get good value for him and someone will meet the asking price.

Once again, the birds trade any relief pitcher who is somewhat good. The bullpen is going to be even worse now. I'll miss both of these guys.

Los Los Angeles Angeles Ohtanis of Los Angeles of Anaheim

Imagine an entire team of Ohtanis
I hope The Show 22 can do this.

He saved you from Tatis Jr.
The biggest meme in baseball history.

TYBJS

Injuries doesn't mean a player is bad. Learn how sports work.

Paying a player to not play means he's a bad player, objectively.

Give it to me straight /mlb/, is TJS not the death sentence it was before? It almost feels like every good pitcher now gets TJS at one point or another and despite losing a year they come back stronger than ever. The biggest case being Shohei Ohtani. When he needed TJS, everyone even not here were exclaiming that it's all over and he's finished but now look at him only 1 year after TJS. He's literally the greatest hitter, pitcher, and just overall player in the entire MLB. So what is the deal with TJS now?

there are still lots of pitchers who don't get back to where they were after TJS, you just don't hear about them

Just goes to show what a chad Ohtani is.

Ohtani takes excellent care of himself which I'm sure most players don't. he's also probably just talented enough to make up for some physical declines.
youtube.com/watch?v=9qUCo-K2OhQ

TJ is definitely recoverable. 2x TJ is pretty much a death sentence however.

Center field is mostly harder to play than left field. However, there are exception's.

i subscribed to the athletic because i heard it had good journalism and today i am greeted with this shit
>6. Joey Votto is traded from the Reds to the Blue Jays at the trade deadline and gives the Blue Jays the much-needed left-handed bat that puts them over the top and leads them to an AL East divisional title.
>7. The Nationals increase their offer to superstar right fielder Juan Soto from $350 million to $390 million and he rejects it, preferring to get to free agency in three years. The Nationals then trade him to the Yankees on Dec. 29 for a package of seven prospects that includes their best prospect, Anthony Volpe.
bowden is a fucking retard

I was gonna give Law the benefit of the doubt here but Goldy had 177 PAs @ MLB as a 23 year old with above average production. What an idiot. I bet this guy never lives down a bad hand in poker.

Almost forgot Bowden's crowning success of front office analytics.

stuff on the athletic is hit or miss depending on the writer, team, and sport being covered
i think it's in a steady decline but Bowden is one of the worst there, just avoid anything with his name or dumb list stuff
there's still occasionally good longform to find there

There are probably 50 hitters and 50 pitchers better than him in the league at this moment. He is the best all around player tho.

The Orioles control MASN. It was part of the deal to bring baseball back to DC.

Nobody is watching spring training games?

You can't name 20 hitters or pitchers you'd take over him in either discipline.

if it wasn't for that deal we'd probably be streaming Nats games on our phones by now

Nothing is going to happen until the undead ghoul that is Peter Angelos dies. He's 92 and in failing health. Then they'll have to fight it out with new ownership, who ever that turns out to be. It won't long, Natsbro.

Attached: peter angelos.jpg (202x249, 6.39K)

the orioles won't be in baltimore in 10 years

MLB had to appease the babies

MASN still owes the Nats 100 million dollars from 10 years ago.

GIGO

he cute

i'm predicting them for 2nd but only because the astros are getting worse and i feel like the bottom is going to fall out in the back half and they'll just be a disaster

Suppose two players hit a home run every at bat. Both hit 500 homers in a season. One has 500 RBIs because the guys in front never get on base. The other has 2,000 RBIs because the guys in front of him always load the bases.

Is the 2,000 RBI guy a better hitter? Or are they equal?

Yeah, Okay. For an undead ghoul maybe.

>Angels
step aside

My pirates ):

Not every RBI is a HR. Some players are clutch and deliver with men on base more often than not. Some players choke. That's a skill. It's not the end all and be all of baseball skills, but it's a valuable one.

>Some players are clutch and deliver with men on base more often than not.
True. But RBI is a shitty statistic that doesn't capture that. And some clutch hitters get fucked because the guys in front of them don't present RBI opportunities very often.

High leverage stats are better for this because they can show how good the player is in clutch moments instead of just how good the team is. Plus, RBI could say the opposite of what you think- in low-pressure games they drive in tons of blowout runs and choke in intense ones with actually good opposition

Attached: 312.png (606x719, 135.82K)

Attached: human2Zombie.jpg (202x249, 8.91K)

If it wasn't for that deal there would be no major league team in D.C.

Except there are literally zero players who are consistently "clutch" which means it's not a skill.

Cope, the members of the ownership group are all locals.

The Giants are the gnats to west coasties while the Nationals are the gnats to east coasties.

All of that is true, but it doesn't discount RBIs as a valuable stat for judging hitters. Not all players are HR threats. Do you want a whole team of fat ass David Ortizes wallowing around the field like beached elephant seals? You need fast slap hitters than can beat out INF hits and steal bases. You need guys that can play middle infield. RBIs count and are valuable. Sac flies are valuable. Hitting away from the runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs is valuable. Seeing eye grounders that score a runner from 2nd with 2 outs are valuable. You can't win if you don't score. You're a smooth brained fan of an AL team, aren't you?

Are YOU a gints fag?

HAHAHAHA. Fucking saved.

Based advanced by runners (including the batter) per runner per AB is the only meaningful hitting statistic.

>You're a smooth brained fan of an AL team, aren't you?
I'm a Braves fan. And I dislike RBI as a "key stat" because Acuña bats leadoff. RBI is really only useful for comparing similar types of players, like middle infielders batting 7-9, etc.

>runners on 2nd and 3rd. Two outs
Roided up TTO masher strikes out swinging for the fences.
Contact hitter ropes one to the outfield scoring 2 runs
Who's the better hitter?

>Hey smoothskin

which is a terribly stupid situation

Then the Braves are stupid for putting a guy who can drive in runs in the leadoff spot.

manfred makes a rule that a female player must pitch to at least 3 batters or play 3 innings in the field and take 1 AB each game for every team. how does the sport change? no trannies allowed

So it becomes the NL with the automatic out?

Yeah, D.C. didn't need a team with the O's already so close by.

I noticed the Mayor of New York said that he wants women to play in MLB, and not too longer after there was a thread about some twitter doctor bitch saying that women can compete with men in sports and are separated just so men won't lose to women. I'm guessing that some liberal think tank decided that their next social justice initiative is to have a gender integration of sports, and the think tank's adherents are now pushing for it.

We wanted a good, well run team though. Fuck the Orioles. It's a Mickey Mouse organization.

For years until 2019 the nast were not any of those either and were just as mickey mouse.

Being trolled very hard... Need that baybaw to start.

your two cities for the price of one ride is over freeloader

>literally an rbi argument
Alright anyone under the age of 40 get out

Not true. The Expos were a shambles when the Lerners bought the team. They rebuilt it from the bottom up. They were perennial contenders until 2020. Now they're rebuilding. They have a good GM and aren't afraid to spend money. What the fuck are the Orioles doing besides waiting for the old man to die so they can feed on his carcass?

RBI arguments>cubgers/recker posting

Going by that logic, we must also give Hartford, Columbus, San Antonio, Jacksonville, Tuscon, and other cities teams. We can't allow the Red Sox, Guardians, Rangers, etc. to have fans in more than one city.

holy based

Attached: 1627935143093.jpg (184x184, 12.09K)

Baseball discussion > genuine off-topic discussion > all of /mlb/s bullshit off-topic posting > pitcher win discussion > literal shitposting >> rbi discussion

Reckgers own ya

LOL you think Tony Gwynn >>> Barry Bonds + Roids.

But they are. wOBA and wRC+ combine the weighted outcomes approach of OPS with the run-creation approach of RBI.

RBI is the Pitcher Wins of hitting. Totally useless statistic that old retards cling to because some newspaper faggot in ~1900 thought it was an interesting detail to print in newspaper accounts and box scores.

Making one final championship run

>one plate appearance sample size
I present to you the greatest hitter the game has ever known.
fangraphs.com/players/john-paciorek/1009937/stats?position=OF

I mean, sort of in the sense that wOBA/wRC+ use linear weights and the 24 possible base-outs configuration, it's kind of baked-in and dissolves into the background. I disagree, but that's actually a really interesting way of describing it.

Attached: tumblr_inline_o0mt8rfDGw1shx9h6_500.jpg (500x308, 29.35K)

How the fuck is John Paciorek not in the HoF?

What’s “Reckgers”?

Again, GIGO. Garbage in, garbage out. Boomers who worship retarded old stats fail. Pencilheaded geeks who worship SABRshit uncritically also fail. The best analytics tools in baseball aren't even public right now and may never be. They are hidden away under lock and key in places like Alex Anthopolous' and Mike Girsch's offices. That's why the Barves won the World Series without breaking a sweat with a team that nobody thought would even make the playoffs. That's why the Cards ditched Mike SABRfaggot Shildt despite getting them to the playoffs.

The World Series in 2022 should be Braves vs. Cardinals, but because of the gay playoff seeding rules in baseball we will have to settle for an NLCS or NLDS with those two teams. It will be the most smartly managed playoff series of all time.

Pitcher wins are retarded, but not totally worthless as a stat. Almost, but not totally. It matters for starters. For relievers, it's totally worthless.

maybe the cardinals should smartly manage to sign some competent pitchers

Attached: 1611434061912.jpg (828x686, 159.58K)

InTheBiz here. The only important hitting stat in our office is what we call "Productive Average":

1. Hits, walks, sac flies, reached-on-errors that score runs.
2. Hits and walks that put the batter on and he eventually scores a run.
3. Two out extra base hits that do not result in either an RBI or the batter scoring.
4. Two out singles that do not result in an RBI where the batter makes it to second on a stole base but does not score.

Add those four categories and divide by plate appearances.

THAT is the only proper way to rank batters. Tradfags BTFO. Sabermetricsfags also BTFO.

The braves were the 5th or 6th best team in baseball last year. Everything broke their way at the exact right time. That's baseball. The best team doesn't always win the championship. That's true of all team sports.

Remember when the Gay Louis scored 10 runs in the first inning of an elimination fame against Atlanta lol

>3. Two out extra base hits that do not result in either an RBI or the batter scoring.
I don't get this one

>reached-on-errors that score runs.
why would this be relevant?

I 'member.
That. Was. Awesome.

Ball in play during a high leverage situation.

The thinking is that a batter who hits an extra base hit with 2 outs can't be faulted for not scoring.

Attached: gnat.jpg (2936x1828, 356.83K)

Buzz buzz.

Correct. Also there is a lot of thinking in our office that most "fielding errors" are actually the result of excellent batsmanship or baserunning, such as hitting a ball very hard or running really hard 100% of the time.

You literally cannot build a better offensive stat than wRC+ unless you're willing to wade into batted ball shit like avg/max EV, barrel%, angle, etc.

Shildt wasn't a sabrfaggot, he pretended to be one and then devolved into a player's guy that let wainwright and yadi play as much as they wanted, even having yadi batting fifth when he should bat eighth or ninth. Their new guy is the sabrfag.
Also the cards aren't a good example of a smart team, they're behind Tampa, Milwaukee, LA, SF, Oakland, and probably a few more in terms of brain power. they got complacent and they've been behind the curve to this day, probably because Jeff luhnow went to Houston.

Think about Barves/Doyers Game 2 NLCS Bottom 9th. 2 out. Rosario batting. Swanson on second. Rosario hits a hard liner that Seager makes a play on 9/10 times. Seager can't handle it. Swanson scores. Barves win.

Official scorer could have called that a hit+RBI or an error and nobody could have complained. Literally a play that could go either way.

Our office would give Rosario credit for that however it was scored. Dude hit the ball hard with two out RISP in a bottom 9th tie game situation and won the game as a result. A player who can do shit like that consistently is a player we want on our team if we can get him at a reasonable price.

It just wasn't the same. As a kid I never felt close to the O's, even when Ripken was around.
