It occurs to me that you could set up a system where you're allowed to fall asleep, but before you enter REM sleep (90 minutes after falling alseep, 60 to be safe) you're awakened by electric shock or somesuch jolt and allowed go fall asleep again.
This comes with its own negative side effects but it's better than sleep deprivation.
Even if she could set something like that up, her mom already thought she was going crazy so she'd definitely put her in the asylum if she found such a device. Plus Freddy has been shown to manipulate the real world anyway, so I doubt it would save you for very long.
Isn't REM sleep precisely the sleep that you need? The improvement would probably be marginal
