Season 1 & 2 are good with, obviously 1 being the best.
Season 3 is good from the first episode to the third or fourth the rest is just filler i felt.
The way things unravel at the end of season 3 is just an outstanding display of lazy writing. I've watched season 1 for the second time cause i needed something to make forget that shitshow at the end.

The book is there for no other reason just for the sake of his developing Alzheimer nothing useful comes out of the wife's book other than that lazily written twisty in a reddit fashion ending of theirs.

Check out pic related. The first season has the same cinematographer as True Detective season 1. People complain about the feminism, but it's more complicated than "grr ebil men," and the actual story and characters are good, and like True Detective, has a dark twist to it.

Hannibal is great but it doesn’t give me TD vibes. It’s still worth watching though.

Not the guy you responded to, but Mindhunter is pretty solid. It doesn’t have the southern gothic atmosphere of TD but it’s very cerebral

it has the occult aspect but different and has so much depth you can watch it multiple times.

also loki is the only detective i can think of that is similar interesting as rust.

imo the closest thing ive seen to season1 is the 1997 movie cure. cure is also in my top3 movies its amazing.

Memories of Murder. It's pretty similar. Also, as an added bonus, it's the best movie ever made.

Frailty, a movie where Mcconaughey recounts his life living with his cereal killer father and how he and his brother were forced to help him. Not much mystery but still great.
