This. Son of Mask is a major step up in most every respect, and you really don't need the backstory from the first movie to enjoy it IMO.

But will watching Son of the Mask first make The Mask unwatchable?

The Majestic, another Jim Carrey motion picture that had a similar titling style, was set in the same universe as The Mask, with the Coco Bongo club being frequented by Carrey's character in both. Carrey's character in The Mask, Stanley Ipkiss, is a descendant of his character in The Majestic.

The Mask is ok but it's underlooked sequel Son of the Mask really raised the bar.

unironically yes, it's a bit lopsided because it tries to please kids and adults alike but overall it's very entertaining

the 1st entry is prerequisite and necessary to fully understand the emotional significance of part 2. i'd recommend watching 1 then 2. in viewing part 2, keep in mind the consequences of free will man has been required to endure since the fall. your life is governed by your own free will, you may be tempted by external forces - out only for the destruction of the soul, but ultimately your actions are your own - and are the result of your own free will. in part 2, Jamie Kennedy captures the entity of one who has denied the semblance of their own free will - that's not to say tempted to fall, but has actually chosen to fall. many people have fallen to eternal damnation through temptation; in the Son of the Mask, you see the intentional fall to damnation. The "Son" of the Mask reveals what would have been had God denied redemption to man through Salvation in Christ. The Mask is the thin veil before our own fall, and Jamie Kennedy plays the part of our martyr.

I couldn't even process what i was watching back then as a young kid but i kept thinking that one decorative mask hanging at the wall would come to life like in the movie and charge at me or something
