I loved Hereditary and liked Midsommar a lot but didn't really care for this

Hereditary was good, but the kid actors were way too ugly. Through the movie I couldn't concentrate due to how ugly they were. All my friends thought they "looked fine", but they're so fucking ugly. I hate people that can't admit when people are objectively ugly.

What makes the Witch better? I'm trying to puzzle out why I didn't like it. I didn't really feel the atmosphere I guess and the characters seemed to be very transparent moral illusions. The goat being Satan I also thought was kind of comedic

They were weird looking for sure but I wouldn't go right to ugly. The dad is Jewish, mom looks like an older lady, the son looks like a regular somewhat brown dude, the daughter legit has some kind of condition

Haven't seen Midsommar, but Hereditary is much more conventional and just not that interesting compared to The Witch

It's a bleak movie with no payoff. At least "The Road" has a pay off.

Hereditary is definitely more conventional in terms of form but I don't think that's inherently a bad thing. I also think its unconventional in terms of substance and has some unusual themes that it executes brilliantly
Definitely bleak. I guess I would have enjoyed it more if the atmosphere ever ramped up or shifted? IIRC it's pretty monotonic the whole way through. There's a sense of building tension in Hereditary and Midsommar although Hereditary does it much better than Midsommar.
