Deep Space Nine vs Babylon 5

Which was the better show and why? And where do you think both shows rank in terms of science fiction TV?

I loved DS9 and I’d personally consider it S tier though I suspect the average Yea Forums viewer would disagree

Babylon 5 was better written, Deep space nine is better acted, directed and has far superior special effects

B5 is the best science fiction series, so it's not fair to compare anything to it.

Finding out the Babylon Series Bible was held onto by the people behind DS9, and had to be forcibly taken back, explained a lot to me about the similarities between the shows.

That said, I liked Deep Space Nine as a kid, and still do, but Babylon 5 really captured young me's imagination and it never really let go, even all these years later.

B5 and DS9 are apples and oranges. At the surface level, the similarities are obvious but the shows pretty much grow apart there. Babylon 5 is your sprawling space opera whereas DS9, though innovative, is still ultimately a Trek show.

Both are among my favorite shows of all time. I don't feel the need to try and place them beyond that.

Both are fantastic. However I think DS9 is better. Both rank high for me

special effects don't really mean shit in science fiction tho. i think it's just a matter of taste. i was already hooked into star trek when tng ended so i naturally gravitated toward that. i appreciate babylon 5 but it's harder for me to get into for being unfamiliar

What fucked B5 was its attempt at future proofing, it shot all of its show in widescreen anticipating what televisions would be in a decade but they rendered all of the effects and space shots in letterbox. They were going to go back in DVD and future home releases to rerender the effects but someone deleted all of the files. I find it hard to watch on a high def tv but it looks great on my old tube tv

I personally prefer ds9, but I like that b5 was pretty much planned out from the beginning. I'm still waiting for them ds9 Blu Rays.

B5 had the best storyline and crew and kicked the shit out of the other shows in its day. It still holds up today as one of the best space shows.
