Eraserhead

It's good, but not great. While the ambiance as a whole is both chilling, soothing, disturbing and perplexing, I found some scenes to be too farcical, pushing the surreal a little too much (for my own tastes) and the camera work in some scenes to be really out of place. The dialogue, or what little there is of it, felt rather forced sometimes and I think I might have enjoyed it more if no sentences were spoken, save for a few by the protagonist.
What did you guys think of it? Which Lynch film do you recommend I watch next?

Okay haha let's discuss the newest Superhero in spandex suits! xD

welcome to lynch.

most people don't like eraserhead for being a well structured, polished film. its interesting exactly because it is perplexing and chilling. Lynch is able to create such fleshed-out, vivid worlds that are so batshit insane but still retain a realism and structure that it all the weirder.

try elephant man and blue velvet. elephant man is much more of a 'normal' film and blue velvet is a surrealist neo-noir.

lynch's only good movie imho

Will do, thank you.

>lynch's only good movie imho
What makes you say that?

thoughts on TP?

The only footage and cuts that have put me in tune with David Lynch are Absurda (2007), "Gotta a light?" and "The long walk".

Blue Velvet has something special for me too. For some reason the LaVelian Satanists have it in their film ranking that reflects their world view. And they are right in that sense. I think it follows the same line of Well Closed Eyes and Hereditary in how the known world has a hidden, or shadow pocket dimension. I don't think Lynch is a bad director, he is human and has successes and losses. He's not an absolute master, but it would be false to say that he's a bad director, that he doesn't have something special.
As a defect, I think it has the same problem as Jodorowsky and Hideo Kojima, in the sense that they are not able to tune in, except in specific and well-defined cases, with the large audience. If you're not able to penetrate the general public's mind, you're doing something wrong. As Dennis Ritchie said about developing Unix, the operating system is simple, but you need to be a genius to understand simplicity. A good film must be objectively universal.

The farcical elements of Lynch, the abrupt shift of tone from pure horror to comedic absurdity, are what MAKES his films truly great and more than just horror movies

Don't you mean Eyes Wide Shut?

i watched it for the first time last night.
it definitely is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, hurried to my bedroom last night when i finished watching it.
a lot of the acting is really great, but some people are better than others.
the story is very mesmerizing and what the fuck worthy
all in all its great imo, would give it an 8/10.

also i learned today that lynch-heads on here suck

hi user!

Yes, I fucked up sorry.

Horrible take

Nah, we’re just tired of retards. Twin Peaks general is one of the best things to come out of this board.

other lynch like directors that are better? any recs?

I mean I personally disagree with your take on Eraserhead, its my second favorite film, but its a very understandable and respectable opinion.
As for what to watch next;
Well like the other user said, Elephant Man and Blue Velvet for both a more "normal" Lynch film and a normal Lynch film.
So sticking with that; The Straight Story if you want something a bit easier and more digestible, and Mulholland Drive if you want something more "Lynch". Both are really good though.
Good luck OP, hope you enjoy the Lynch ride.

Funny enough, I got into film when my ex was pregnant. I started with a few Criterion rentals from my library then found Eraserhead. I wasn't prepared to see everything I felt about the pregnancy laid out on screen. Every bit of it I could relate to so eerily. Easily the best Lynch flick for me.

i think eraserhead is a masterpiece and lynch's best work. i'd recommend reading cdn.mashreghnews.ir/old/files/fa/news/1392/9/25/459473_512.pdf from pg203 at the "Bringing It All Back to Henry" sub heading - hopefully that helps as a basis for a better understanding about the film. i'd recommend watching blue velvet next. best of luck user

Thank you!

>A good film must be objectively universal.
Terrible opinion.

What defines a good film?

Me liking it and some other, less important qualities which I can't be bothered to explain to you at this time

>A scene in which Henry hears noises coming from down the hall in his apartment. He investigates and looks into a room. Two women are tied up on a bed and a man with a cigar approaches them, holding a black box. The women spot Henry and he runs back to his room. (When David Lynch first released the Eraserhead DVD through his website, it contained a "booth code" as an extra. Going to the phone booth section of DavidLynch.com and typing in the booth code, showed you this deleted scene.)

I can't find this scene anywhere on the internet and it is driving me mad. Anyone here seen it?

bump for interest

Watch city of pirates if you like eraserhead

While we are all here, can someone explain the ending of TP The return to me already? I just dont get it.

1) Laura to Cooper: Don't forget, you're here forever.
2) Cooper interprets it as "Do it for her"
3) duge jons

So he technology never left the Black Lodge? Because if that's true then why did Laura literally tell him he could leave?
