By utilizing the Mask's temporal neural network, the Mask gazed into the future and witnessed the IV/ID scene in Son of the Mask, discovered Franklin, learned about this traumatizing history, and used it. All in the space of a couple of frames.

In the original Le Masque you can see the obvious fear and trepidation on the face of the original Bouncer. He's clearly unsure of himself and feels threatened, and this is exemplified when he cave immediately to threats of Jack's son and the gang. Meanwhile, the helmeted Bouncer is always in charge and calm, even when presented with obvious supernatural powers. I have to assume that his confidence comes from his powerful body armor and helmet, which provide him with defense, causing confidence. Although Bouncer (no helmet) is clearly the senior here, Bouncer (helmet) is obviously more skilled at the job and more powerful. Perhaps the two bouncers are supposed to be the same character, showing the effects of years of experience and training as well as proper equipment?

The universe of The Mask is played totally straight, and it's pretty dark. At it's core it's a mob film with some idiot mixed in. The Mask just happens to have cartoon based super powers since Stanely loved those.

Honestly the script was a bit more solid than SotM's script. Cartoonish where appropriate, but somehow more fun and enjoyable despite this. It didn't quite go as far as SotM did, and smartly played Dorian extremely straight. He would've been right at home in a serious crime thriller.

While I agree that Carrey was key, I don't think he was the whole reason.
Consider this example: the source of a lot of the comedy in Beavis and Butthead was based on the majority of the side characters, especially extras, being generally normal people who were played straight and were very aware of how fucking weird Beavis and Butthead were. The Mask essentially did this, by playing Edge city about as straight, and then contrasting it with The Mask's antics.
Son of the Mask ignored this contrast completely and made absolutely fucking everybody and everything just as cartoonish and goofy as the Mask himself.

I would disagree. For the most part yes. But the Alvey vs. Otis scenes were incredibly well made for their time. Well directed, quality CGI given the budget and year, and rather lengthy and complex. They even bothered to do a high quality animated segment of them fighting inspired by the Tex Avery and Chuck Jones type cartoons referenced constantly in both films. It's obviously not an amazing movie overall but some real craft and talent did go into it.

That mask is actually creepy as fuck.
Clearly they got the idea from the original concept of the comic where the mask orbits between different characters that give different "intrepretations" to their power.
It's impressive how the production changed in such a way who was Big Head really is. They took the ambiguous morality of the original concept and turned it into a film for the whole family. The only film that had the same treatment and was successful was Storm Troppers.
