Depends on where exactly on the front it's taking place, the length of it was massive and the worst fighting was generally constrained to a few choke points. It didn't look exactly like Ypres all the way down to Switzerland. Plus trenches were set up in multiple layers, you got back to greenery quite soon once you moved away from the ground zero of No Man's Land. It's entirely possible they're pushing beyond a communication trench further behind the line and are facing a counterattack.

Oh so then they're abandoning the trench? Something that didn't exist by 1917. By 1917-1918 trenches were largely abandoned in favor of just sitting in the moonscape because anything static would be subject to heavy bombardment. Defense in depth was the name of the game by 1917. Even the premise of the film is retarded. They would move West back to Battalion HQ to give information and they would transmit the orders via Morse Code or whatever they were using at the time to the other Battalion HQ who would send a runner to the front.

I love ww1 photos so much, theres something about them that i can only describe as "involuntarily satanic" because everyone look evil by default, the mentality of the time was way more stiff than nowdays, and even at the worst images theres this beauty to it that is extinct, and i am not talking about the technology of the image but the aglomeration of little details hinting a world that is gone.
