Holy Mountain purely exists as an aesthetic experience. It's like doing LSD without LSD. And honestly the film is really great for just the aesthetic alone. Adum's retarded for thinking it has some powerful philosophical meaning behind it. There are comments on politics and religion but they're not super duper insightful - Jodorowsky is mostly just goofing off and you can tell this especially with the film's ending. Eraserhead is indeed a masterpiece and a film that does have a lot of powerful meaning in it - it's about Henry's liberating experience from completely rejecting/disassociating from traditional morality (at least that's how I saw it). Also SNY is probably Kaufman's best work even if it does have a facade of being very artsy fartsy.

It's truly baffling to me that someone even remotely familiar with art house would call Lynch pretentious. His films are mostly just a series of vignettes that elicit an emotional reaction based purely on the audiovisual kino being presented. There's isn't a ton of symbolism and "lol you need to have a masters in fine art and intimate familiarity with Rembrant to get it" type stuff. I wouldn't consider his films "heady" at all and I think that trying to assign a logical interpretation actually detracts from them. They're so easily digestible and inherently accessible because they're all about emotion and eliciting certain feelings rather than trying to make some contrived philosophical statement.

It really depends how you watch movies.

The first time I watched Mulholland Drive, I was really frustrated by how the characters seemed to be deliberately designed to be one-dimensional stereotypes, how there didn't seem to be any sort of functional plot development, and how there were many scenes in the film that just went nowhere. And then I went online to try to understand why this was considered one of the best movies of all time and I found some film critic airhead saying some shit like "Lynch masterfully denies the spectator his desire for rational diegesis" while sniffing his own farts. I was looking in this movie for things that I was looking for in traditional narratives, with a Campbellian Hero's Journey and a character development arc and Jungian / Biblical archetypes and whatnot. So by breaking those expectations, I felt that anyone who pretended to like the movie was the kind of prick that went to the New School and unironically uses the phrase "mise en scene" outside of a film class; you know, pretentious assholes trying to be cool.

He obviously wants the approval of the 'smart and judgemental' internet poster he considers himself, its pretty rough to watch this guy try to bargain with other smartasses for the 'correct' snide remark

But the second time around, I relaxed a little bit and allowed myself to just let the movie have an emotional effect on me without trying to have any conscious structural expectations.

First off, just watching the movie a second time made me more patient with story. Since I already knew Diane's ultimate fate was that of a failed actor and a jealous ex-lover, it made me understand the "dream interpretation" more. Scenes that previously stood out to me as just weird or unnecessary made way more sense (eg.: the bungled hit scene is there because Diane would like to imagine her hit on Camilla failed due to the hitman's ineptitude, absolving her of responsibility).

But even without a plot-centered analysis, I understood the movie was more intended to invoke a certain psychological aesthetic; it's supposed to feel tense and dream-like, especially the kind of tortured dreams a failed actress who just ordered the murder of her ex-lover would have. The scene with Patrick Fischler that once just seemed weird and pointless made more sense in servicing the theme of Diane trying to escape her fears in her dreams, only to be confronted with them in an even more horrifying way (and also, your brain does tend to just insert random people you've only ever seen once in your dreams). The movie made more emotional sense than rational sense, which I guess is the kind of conclusion that comes across as pretentious, but if you really think about it, it's like, some people don't watch movies with their logical brains turned on to deliberately look for perfect logical consistency in the plot structure and relatable character developments. Some people just watch movies and then like the movies that make them have the biggest emotional reaction. In some sense, that's the least pretentious thing there is.

This faggot reads way too into animated children's movies. Actual definition of pretentious, even more than dog fucker. At least dog fucker has some level of self awareness.

Dreams are often only half-sensical, only make sense in bits and pieces, and while they can gesture towards a grander narrative, they're often muddled and hazy. Your subconscious isn't exactly Aaron Sorkin, and that's part of what makes dreams (and Mulholland Dr) so tense and discomforting, the fact that things don't make sense.

But I still think that Silencio scene is fucking boring.

I even like that movie and think it's too high. I know it was made as a double feature sorta tribute movie, but it feels like a fucking joke film.

I thought the dialogue was super forgettable. I mostly just heard noise when all the characters were talking all the time and had virtually zero interest in the plot. There were some interesting visual moments with Tim Roth's character in the second half of the film. The kinetic way QT shoots the action sequences was interesting enough. Having over half the film in the warehouse was such an eyesore and overall the film was very stale and underwhelming.
Inglorious Basterds while still a flawed movie, has much more going on. Overall better acting, better cinematography, better choreography but still it has tone, pacing, continuity, writing issues of its own. it's an overall much more engaging and interesting film
