Okay. Let's discuss the "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" song.
How the fuck did people partake in this and look at the finished product and say "Yeah, that's good enough." It's so bland and isn't catchy at all. The actor is playing what is supposed to be a cartoon character yet his performance is so tame and dry. And yet everyone goes along with him for the party but he's no less interesting than the guy on stage before him. Did this just look funny on paper? Because the delivery is so weak it baffles me they allowed it.
Additionally why does no one freak out at his reality warping powers? "I.D. not I.V." People should have better reactions than that.
What is unfortunate about Le Masque is that after its success le Carré ended up in one movie after the other where the director would try to recapture that lightning in a bottle. Despite giving his best, le Carré could never succeed because these directors expected him to carry the film. The fundamental misunderstanding was that his explosive performance was what lent Le Masque its incredible dynamism, but it was the perfect harmony between the plot calling for someone like him and his unique style that led to the perfect synthesis. Director Chuque Russeau understood this. His successors didn't.
The mask’s reality warping powers cause those in its immediate vicinity to perceive whatever’s going on as rational; its power to alter one’s perception extends to real life thus the explanation for why the writers, producers, and director of the film thought ‘eyes off of you’ was pretty good.
le Carré for sure has big shoes to fill if he intends to take a swing at being the iconic Machiavellian character in "Le Flou Bleu"

I think a general audience might go for the tone, but they'd still want an actor on the same caliber as Jim Carrey for the role, even if its more serious. So regardless of if they went for a light/dark tone they'd still need someone who the audiences would accept.

do you like the son of mask? the start of the movie is a bit too slow for my taste but when Tim Avery puts the mask on the movie really comes into its own commercially and artistically. the whole movie has clear crisp cgi and a new sheen of consummate professionalism really giving the movie a big boost. its been compared to the mask but i think the son of mask has a far more loony and cynical sense of humor.
in the movie tim sings "i cant take my eyes off you" i think its the movies undisputed best scene. a song so catchy you might not listen to the lyrics but you should because its about the importance of love and genres in todays society

Similar thing happened with Fembusters where the musical number just didn't work. There they at least scrapped it, but here it was (if I understand right) the only major part where the father in the movie is using the mask. Taking out the scene pretty much removes any time for the father to be using the thing.
Director of The Mask was pretty awesome about realizing how to make the cartooniness feel real. They have a guy get shot and killed due to the Mask's antics, they have the shotgun holes from the neighbor/landlady that all remain and so on. There's some genuine weight given to the actions taking place even if it is a set of silly actions.
The story was pretty dramatically changed so that Stanley didn't become a psychopath.

Yeah, I can't fault your complaints there. They should have played up Tim's Masksona being the cliched 50s Dad archetype, but part of the plot depends on him not having the Mask so Mask!Otis & Alvey can have their arguments over who will be the center of attention.

But, what about the original The Mask's Cuban Pete scene where the female officer starts singing with him, and then he orchestrates the giant Conga Line and nearly gets Doyle to join in before Kellaway pulls him back? Like said, The Mask is able to warp people's perceptions to not question things.
