I agree with Astro Monster but what is so special about Mothra vs Godzilla? I constantly see it being praised as the best but I never got why. It's not as silly yet wierdly engaging as Astro Monster, it's not as entertaining as Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster, it's not as fun as Destroy All Monsters and it's not as kino as the original 54 Godzilla.

Why is this one so special among fans? I always saw it as one of the lesser entries in the series

Showa movies are the original Godzilla, brainlet. They were mostly made by the same creative team and actors as the 1954 movie. Godzilla is a character. Not every movie a particular character is in has to be similar in tone. Is every Star Wars sequel shit because they are not the same as the 1977 movie? Is every MCU movie shit because they're not the same as Iron Man?

Wrong nigger. The only five made to be directed toward children were Son of Godzilla, All Monsters Attack, Godzilla vs Hedorah, Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Megalon. That being said, Godzilla vs Hedorah kind of fails at being a kids movie due to some of the darker imagery, but it was made for a children's festival in Japan.

Yeah I think Yoshimitsu Banno was trying to recapture the "message" of the original movie, but it actually was made for children. The main character is a kid. And yes it is disturbing. I think it's the only movie other than 1954 that shows civilians getting straight up killed by one of the kaiju.

I don't think blood is a non-starter for something to be a kid's movie, especially since Japanese people are not as conservative about these things as Westerners. The cursing is only in the dub too. There's not really a concept of "cursing" in Japanese. I consider it a kids movie since the plot is pretty simplistic and easy to follow, and it takes place at a children's amusement park. This movie also has other silly elements like Godzilla and Anguirus talking to each other, and an ending song sung by kids. The movie poster is also a dead giveaway. It's barely visible in this image, but the red text on the right side has furigana (reading aid) next to the kanji (Chinese characters), which would only be used by children who are still learning kanji in school. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla was when the series tried to recapture a more serious, adult tone.

I just prefer the story of the 64 version. But really it was one of the ones I remember seeing at a very early age so it might just come down to nostalgia. The 1992 version is great though, the ending is one of the most beautiful and moving things I've ever seen in any movie, not just among the Godzilla franchise.

If 10 is like a native speaker, I'm probably like a 3 or a 4, since I studied it for about 3-4 years in college. I might even be a 2 at this point since I haven't really studied in a while. I don't know how hard it would be for a Dutch person to learn it. The hardest part about Japanese is reading it, since they use two different alphabets of monosyllabic letters. One is for native Japanese words, and the other is for loanwords or "fictional" words (like Gojira). This makes words fully spelled out really long, so they use Chinese characters as a way to shorten the spelling of nouns and verbs. It's just a lot of memorization beyond being able to read the two alphabets.

It was good, but I have some strong criticisms of it. Mothra wasn't kawaii enough, and King Ghidorah looked like something copy-pasted out of a Lord of the Rings movie. The music was a lot better than the abysmal 2014 movie, but it was mixed too low compared to the SFX and dialogue. I hope the music is a lot louder in the bluray release.

Yeah that 'trilogy' is definitely the best out of the Showa movies, if not the entire franchise. King Kong vs Godzilla wasn't meant to be a serious movie, though. It's a self-aware satire about Godzilla's own popularity that rehashes the 1933 King Kong along with the 'salaryman' sitcoms that were popular in Japan at the time. The final battle at Mt. TLJ tanked the franchise because Rian Johnson tried to take George Lucas' creation and use it to tell his own story. That's my whole point. They stayed faithful to the OT and expanded upon it while being very different. The Disney movies flip-flop between being either derivative schlock or violating the established rules and conventions of the fictional universe.
