yes, it's true that it would have been the point if she had had braces in the movie. Unfortunately the filmmakers chose to go in another direction

she had braces in this scene but not in the later scene in which she's wearing a spacesuit and smiles again. this was a continuity error, they didn't put the braces back on her when filming the latter scene. the bond movies have been rereleased a number of times on vhs, dvd, whatever with the usual digital hatchetwork applied. after the first vhs run, which is the version that played on tv, her braces were edited out of this scene for continuity's sake with no thought to the consequences as the scene makes no sense without them. this was the 80s, the vast majority of screecaps and footage on the internet today, 35+ years later, is from later runs of the film which featured the edited-out braces.

I've never saw most of the bond films, especially Moonraker.
When I saw the scene I thought nothing of it. Until I saw the mandela thing. Then I also thought she had braces. Even though I watched the movie in 2017. My theory is that the joke is so obvious that people automatically think that well of course she has braces. It really just the human brain automatically filling stuff.
