He just doesn't want to put up with Arthur's mom's bullshit. He hits Arthur because he came to his house, talked to Bruce, and tried to murder Alfred. Going with the other meaning of it being his base/primal/animal self, maybe it’s a way of saying he never had any hidden darker part to him, he’s just a normal guy doing some fucked up shit because he wants to. The cat isn’t really a thing just like The Joker isn’t a thing, it’s not an alter ego but just a sad, angry Arthur in makeup.

You can tell by comparing the script to the leaked pics and trailer that there is a lot of improv with this movie. Many of the scenes will be similar or the same, but minor elements will be different.

He would see himself as a victim, and he most likely has been victimized by many (as shown in the trailer by being beaten up several times for no reason), but he would also be delusional due to his mental disorder, which would turn to paranoia and hyper-vigilance over further slights, and when he finally has enough of it it will lead to murder, and most of them would be unjustified.

There are hints about him being agressive and crazy from the beginnig of the script tho, before and after his killings. He also tries to choke Alfred
