You'll probably dislike a few of the (protagonist) characters after seeing the series, but the comic is pretty solid in terms of entertainment. Also has the benefit of having its story told to completion.
The TV series has been neutered quite a bit, but also provided improved interpretations of some characters, most noteably Homelander. I also prefer this Huey more than the comic version even though he's more of a wuss. His family arc was tiresome as shit to read which is entirely discarded here.

Something you need to understand about Homelander. They aren't worried because thousands of people would die. That is perfectly fine with them. The reason Homelander is a threat is because there is no way to kill him quickly or lock him down and those "Thousands" are people in power and there is really no way to stop him from doing it.

They have no problem ordering the death of hundreds of thousands of people that aren't themselves. But the Homelander is a direct threat to them. If he turns then they die and there isn't a goddamned thing they can do about it. It is the real threat these supers pose. It isn't to the people as the people are already oppressed by those in power and in a lot of cases are already incapable of forming an effective resistance to them. Their relative invulnerability and ability to shoot lasers out of their eyes is irrelevant.

The Supers scare the shit out of people in powers because their greatest fear is that they say jump and then Homelander says "No, how about you jump or I use my heat vision to burn you to death".

If Supers didn't pose a direct threat and were not capable of directly killing those in power if they so desired they wouldn't be treated as such a dire issue. But because they can anyone in a position of power is scared shitless because they know with Supers around what true power really is and how false theirs is.

If they hadn't changed butcher's character so much and actually had faithfully adapted the badass in the comics I'd say easily 4 seasons. But right now only character worth watching is Homelander (ok Deep is cool too but you know what I'm saying) so I'd say 2 seasons, 3 top.

It's all been chopped up and shifted around so it's hard to say. Honestly the next season could wrap things up, or if its a big enough of a hit it could go on for another six.

The comics have plenty to fill at least 5 seasons with, and that is without filler.
