I don't mind jumpscares myself, but I think they are perceived as the quick and easy way to get a strong reaction from the audience. So they are looked down on by people who want horror movies to be taken seriously.

When loads of very shitty low quality indie horror was flooding the market that did jump scares by flashing scaryface.png on the screen. All in all a jump scare can be a decent way to let off built tension quickly when the need arises, but needs to be done well.
