You're right but "failing to understand his source material" is the only way you could make a sequel to alien. Anything else would be a retread of the first. The interesting part about the Alien (and M:I) movies is it's essentially just different directors put their own spin on the same premise. Cameron's spin involved spectacular action scenes and state of the art special effects.
