Nah it was a makeshift trap see he'd use the food to lure the Thing in his room then when it gets caught in the rope he expertly placed he'd throw his jacket on top of it and beat it with his shoes and after he killed it he'd peel out like a mad man in his expertly built escape ship

The only hint that he might have been one is that he ran out of the building during the power outage and that he didn't give a shit enough about the bottle of scotch being infected to drink straight from it.
It's been shot down by Kurt Russell, he froze to death as a human in the PS2 game, he survived as a human in the comics (until he later got assimilated while blowing up a submarine), and in the cancelled Sci-Fi series he and MacReady's frozen bodies were going to be discovered as humans. Plus the prequel shows that it can't copy metal, so his earring and fillings shouldn't have been there.
