>In an interview with the Radio Times while promoting her upcoming documentary series titled The Space Race, Mulgrew responded to a question regarding a numbers of fans discontent with Star Trek: Discovery. The question noted that some people claim the dislike of Discovery has a “misogynist edge to the vitriol.”
>Mulgrew responded to the question by not only stating that the original series was “extremely misogynist,” but that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was too. She even lumped in Star Trek: The Next Generation as it followed Jean-Luc Picard.
>“I don’t think you should be surprised by that. Did you watch the original series? It was extremely misogynist. That’s what it was for years and Picard followed that to a certain extent. Roddenberry himself was that way. We are simply going to have to change this sensibility, this ideology, and we are, but it’s like moving granite. It takes a long time. We are not a society that has endorsed females as equals to males on television.”
Roodenberry was a bit of a money grubbing creep. Some episodes of TOS are undisputedly misogynistic. Discovery is still SHIT HOUSE m8.
Nicholas Mitchell
Implicity agreeing that the dislike for STD is wholly rooted in "misogyny" and not because it's just fucking shithouse. I'm not saying that element doesn't exist at all, but I liked Voyager and very much dislike STD. You will find that actual misogyny is extremely rare and those who are accused of it often have wives and daughters.
Sebastian Ramirez
This. Also actors are all being extra woke these days simply because they have to. You can't trust that they really believe what they're saying.
Samuel Watson
>I liked Voyager and very much dislike STD Based, same here mate
if we lived in such a time of misogyny, as women like this claim, not only would VOY or STD never have been made with a female lead, but these women wouldn't even be allowed to voice this opinion
so they are objectively wrong and incorrect on every level. If the problems they say exist actually existed, they wouldn't be allowed to say they existed. The fact they are allowed to say the problems exist shows, without doubt, that the problems don't exist.
Christian Reed
This coming from the woman who treated a woman like shit because she was a woman, does she address her massive hypocrisy in all of this?
Bentley Watson
Saying that "Picard followed that to a certain extent" isn't exactly "lumping in TNG" It sounds like a fairly nuanced answer to a blunt question. There are always going to be retards using "hurr durr women characters" as a reason for a show being shit, but these mouthbreathers should be ignored so that the actual problems can be talked about.
Hudson Evans
No but then again if it wasn't popular no one would care about, it would just be some 60s tv show that got two seasons before being shit canned and might be brought up once in a blue moon on sci fi forums.
James Scott
That shitty softcore porn shit she did after was worth her leaving the show. Lost some sperm to that shit
Michael Morgan
Lol, imagine actually thinking that these people only pretending to be insane. Their views are all genuine
James Edwards
This is becoming truly absurdist Imagine being a trekkie (espically when it was considered pretty weird - so post the era where it was big tv) only for one of the cast to turn around and call you a bigot for enjoying it
how much more can white men take
Jayden Parker
am i a bad person for liking TNG?
Landon Price
>tfw you don't watch TNG anymore even though it is your favorite trek series because you have seen each episode at least 10 to times and remember each scene beat for beat
David Wright
Well yes technically these people don't actually care about women and have made lives worse for women. But they accomplish their goals under the veil of feminism. That's why they're so successful. They have mastered the trojan horse and with their control of media they can dictate how the average person perceives reality.
True but most can't view things like that. No matter how obvious that men have continually lifted women up they will still say no men are the oppressors and women did everything in spite of men.
Hunter Jenkins
>You will find that actual misogyny is extremely rare and those who are accused of it often have wives and daughters.
Misogynists come in all shapes and sizes. You seem to have a very limited view of what counts and misogynistic.
Tyler Cook
You'd have to be a very insecure and thin skinned loser to be unable to admit that some things you used to enjoy when you were younger might have had negative elements to them you simply did not register or understand until at an older age.
Ryan Baker
If you liked "Code of Honor" then yes
Justin Cox
Code of Honor is a master class in how not to produce a TV show.
Dylan Rogers
I know what misogyny means, at least what it is supposed to mean. Misogyny is hatred of women, a clinical and irrational hatred of any female, a homicidal variety of hatred. Being sexist, or saying a woman is a bitch or shouldn't be able to vote or are bad at sports is not misogyny, despite what your gender studies professor might have told you.
Matthew Watson
>all these queerbaits, semites, and cunts using the Apollo 11 anniversary as an opportunity to shill cunts in space over and over and over again may they live in interesting times
Angel Butler
>using the old heteronormative racist bigot definition sorry sweaty it's 2019 get with the program
Logan Wood
no it doesn't Misogyny had a clear and concise definition until fairly recently, now it's become a catch-all term for anything that puts women's noses out of joint.
Kevin Mitchell
>misogyny >/mJˈsɒdʒ(ə)ni/ >noun >Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.
I see no major change in the definition.
Robert Cox
>Misogyny refers specifically to a hatred of women. The word is formed from the Greek roots misein (“to hate”) and gynē (“woman”). Each of these roots can be found in other English words, both common and obscure. Gynē helped to form gynecologist and androgynous, and misein can be found in such words as misoneism (“a hatred, fear, or intolerance of innovation or change”) and misandry (“a hatred of men”).
Austin Howard
The definition of the word has been altered over the past 2 decades.
wsj.com/articles/misogyny-has-its-meaning-shifted-1401490009 >The Oxford English Dictionary revised its definition of "misogyny" back in 2002, changing it from "hatred of women" to "hatred or dislike of, or prejudice against women." And after Ms. Gillard gave her "misogyny" speech in 2012, the editor of Australia's Macquarie Dictionary acknowledged that their definition was in need of a similar expansion.
Benjamin Thompson
how were the females in Next Gen not shown as equal? For that matter how in TOS? Yeah people in the 60s/70s still realized that men and women are different but was there ever any indication that this affected their worth?
Lucas Ortiz
>Gene Roddenberry has shown us a wonderful glimpse of a future wherein mankind works together to solve all problems! >eh, no sweetie. TOS and TNG were horrible rapist shows and we can fix his mistakes now!
Giving women rights was a mistake.
Noah Evans
Language evolves. That's completely natural.
Luis Ross
Bitch was in the worst Trek after Discovery, she ought to keep her trap shut.
Gavin Fisher
if you are a white, straight man you are bad period!
Juan Diaz
Go watch Spock's Brain, Wolf in the Fold, Lights of Zentar and The Turnabout Intruder. I like TOS a lot but it is totally fair to say it could be sexist or racist.
Eli Peterson
How were they misogynist exactly? You do realize that means "hating women" right? It seems to me that Gene loved women, because every episode had a new hot piece of ass.
William Morgan
not when there's perfectly good words already in place i.e. sexism and chauvinism. calling every slight and setback misogyny is newspeak plain and simple.
Dominic Peterson
>people in the 60s/70s still realized that men and women are different >was there ever any indication that this affected their worth? these are mutually exclusive Contemporary dogma states that women can do anything men can do, and oftentimes better. Refuting this in any way is bigotry. Even if you're doing it like Joe Rogan when he shit talks trannies being allowed to fight women in UFC, out of safety for the women themselves. This is how far we've come. Misogyny used to be abject hatred of women, but now it can be interpreted to mean presumption that women need protecting, which is logically presupposed by generally wishing women to be safe. Words no longer have meaning.
Language evolves because people interpret things differently. Corporations redefining a word and academic institutions enforcing it onto HR departments from the top down is unnatural.
Ayden Wilson
>b-but star trek w-was always progressive! lmao btfo, and also proof that TOS is the best trek
Levi Stewart
the usage of sexism leaves the door open for men to accuse women of discriminating against them this is unacceptable and dumbfuck zoomers have no fucking clue what chauvinism even is
Austin Martin
>first interracial kiss on TV >not lefty bullshit speculative fiction has always been dominated by the left
Joshua Scott
Watch The Turnabout Intruder and tell me whoever wrote that isn't a misogynist. Or basically any episode where any woman attempting to exercise authority is crazy and shrill. Its a minority but pretending it didn't happen is retarded.
Landon Hall
And that's why TOS is the best Trek. TNG onward treated gender and race as something only skin deep and that everyone is basically the same, which feels fake as fuck.
Nolan Fisher
So you aren't allowed to have incompetent female leaders on tv?
Julian Jones
It just sounds like reality to me. Have you ever had a female boss? Women with authority/power are insufferable
Leo Wood
No they didn't. They often commented on the differences between people but as opposed to it being a point of conflict everyone served to compliment each other.
Joshua Cook
How are those things evidence of hatred against women aka misogyny? They merely show men as better than women, which is at worst is sexist or chauvinistic.
Cameron Jackson
>first interracial kiss!! who cares, the last episode of TOS was basically anti-feminist in fucking 69. most likely gene wanted to fuck black women and thats why he put that kiss in the show. watch any episodes with mudd its pure kino. >but it was progressive back then and now its sexist and racist
Jason Ward
I should have specified that I was referring to the human characters. Earth is treated as mostly homologous culture. The concept of ethnic groups is wholly ignored.
Caleb Reed
They treated race within humans the same way we would treat hair color or fashion choice, but they treated species differentiation the way almost everyone except the most deracinated urbanite hipsters experience race. It can be interpreted as either pro or anti-assimilationist, but it is almost always saying "diversity is our strength" in some form or fashion.
TOS either doesn't do this or does it in a very subtle way. Of course everything about TOS was more subtle than the other shows, but that only makes it better.
Dylan Hill
I get her point but regardless of 'sexism' STD is a fucking travesty of television writing and insulting to fans of other Star Trek shows. If the series was the same but Michael was a dude I'd still shit all over it for being awful. I've done my fair share of shitting on Voyager too, but Voyagers biggest crimes were missed opportunities and wasted potential. STD in comparison is Star Trek in name only. Pretty much all of its problems have nothing to do with women characters.
>We are not a society that has endorsed females as equals to males on television
Because you arent equal and never will be. Same that a man will never have the societal value of a woman since she has the kids.
Deal with it
Jayden Morgan
When you end up painting basically all women in authority positions as crazy, you are allowed to criticize that the show has clear issues when it comes portraying the opposite sex.
Alexander Gray
Of course you can but it's clear when you wheel out the same lifeless cardboard cut out to stand next to the cast.
You're right about the racial differences being ignored but they still commented on other biological differences.
It goes beyond male chauvinism user, it is basically actively looking to punish.
I defy you to highlight how human racial differences between characters were significant in TOS. The lack of their significance was the significance. Also TOS was rarely subtle or even more subtle than most other trek shows.
Christopher Young
i hope you tards are starting to understand why we need Islam now
Dominic Torres
Well they didn't do it every time but it was incredibly obvious when it did happen because of how blatant it was.
Lucas Edwards
DS9 dropped the n bomb ffs
Jackson Rodriguez
>reddit letter media
cringe
Charles Cruz
That was one episode and in the end Sisko accepts he was being a dumbass about the whole thing and joins in on the fun.
Christopher Young
cringe bait
Zachary Thompson
>it is totally fair to say it could be sexist or racist.
in what way were women or races shown to be generally inferior?
Connor Parker
No it's not and Sisko doesn't decide he was being a dumbass, he just decides that just because race hate existed doesn't mean he should totally write off the past which is weirdly relevant to this thread. Then there is the episode where they go to the mid 21st century, Sisko and Bashir are dumped in a ghetto and Dax is helped out uptown which was genuinely a bit of a subtle.
Josiah Williams
>Marina Sirtis shits on the fans >gets a guest star spot on Kurtzman's Picard show >Mulgrew shits on the fans, Roddenberry and TOS >expresses a desire to appear on the Picard spin-off The absolute state of these cunts...
There was nothing racial about the ghetto episode, it was about class and the "forgotten man."
John Turner
>Mudd
Best Trek character. I want a series just following his exploits.
Levi Walker
Just watch those episodes if you want to see a bit of sexism. Top tier racist TOS is the Omega Glory and The Paradise Syndrome. In defense of both of those episodes The Omega Glory is just more dumb than it is racist and The Paradise Syndrome is actually trying to inclusive, they just go about in a way that totally undermines that goal. By far my most racist episode of any trek will be Code of Honor in TNG. Its fucking hilarious.
Austin Mitchell
That's like asking Shit about why it doesn't like flowers. Fuck this whore!
Liam Gomez
Wait what
Adam Parker
Yeah, nah m8. A pretty young white girl is found on the streets without ID or money and gets help. Two men of color get found on the streets get found without ID or money and they are dumped in a ghetto by the cops. Its not actually that subtle, it is just that since its Trek we don't think of the characters in those terms and don't pick up on it right away.
Christian Stewart
That's because she gets found by some rich guy who thinks she's hot. It was pure luck, you're reading way too much into it. If she had appeared where they did she'd be in the ghetto too
Isaac Jenkins
Nah m8, it's definitely intentional. At least it is according to Ira Behr.
Tyler Barnes
>Only female lead actor and face of an entire series of trek says trek is sexist White Privilege
Why would mulgrew care about some broke ass network show? She's been in marvel movies
Christian Collins
She is actually not wrong, but shitting on a show from 60's for being misogynist is really stupid, ESPECIALLY when its a show that paved the way for more liberal ideas to trinkle into mainstream TV. Roddenberry was a visionary, but also definitely a sleezebag.
Joseph Roberts
She wants females to be treated equal to males but doesn't realize what that really means
Jack Taylor
>Code of Honor
How did this get made? Fucking seriously.
Juan Morgan
>Star Trek is sexist >says main character in female led Star Trek show what more do women folk want?
Elijah Stewart
Watch "Space Seed" with any lib woman if you wanna get her to hate Trek. That episode is hilarious.
Robert Gutierrez
They simply are oblivious to the irony >More wyomen leads and equal pay >Say the highest paid most successful Hollywood super star lead actresses
James Barnes
Oh God I forgot about Space Seed. That is a pretty good episode otherwise. And you can write it off as not sexist since somehow every else but Spock is enamoured with Khan, history bitch just takes it to the extreme.
Andrew Gomez
Do white women ever stop complaining?
Jose Bailey
Just because it was progressive for its time it doesn't negate the show's flaws, such as the subtle and not so subtle sexism that was still there.
Jace Wright
Western society is highly gynocentric. Her bullshit is the inversion of the actual situation. It's a case of the roastbeef crying as she strikes you.
So why do people take offense when someone accurately points it while talking in the context of sexism?
Nicholas Adams
>haha burn the culture to the ground How's your wife's kid doing?
Jaxon Watson
I'm not offended right now
Nicholas Gomez
>liberal You're neo-marxist, rabid dogs.
Austin Sullivan
I wouldn't be surprised that was last time Starfleet ever employed a person to be just a general "Ship Historian". They probably let her stat with Khan just to get rid of her. What failure of a Starfleet officer.
William Brooks
Fuck if I know. All media is a product of its time, it'd be stupid not to expect some culture shock when watching something from over 50 years ago.
Jeremiah Wright
No the Enterprise D had a 20th century historian. I fail to see how that is relevant in deep space though.
Josiah Morales
What is racist about Code of Honor? The niggers were represented as a strange and different culture who starfleet treated with respect. If you think it's racist maybe you don't respect different cultures!
Brandon Howard
I didn't realize this episode was racist until after I read about it on the internet. It dealt with an alien race with a patriarchal and oppressive regime who just happened to be humanoid and dark skinned, what's the big deal?
Leo Ross
despite being roughly 50% of the population males have invented 99% of everything
Dominic Walker
The Enterprise specifically gets dragged into time travel shenanigans almost as much as its holodeck malfunctions, its indisputably practical to have a historian around.
Anthony Brooks
Read this as a trump tweet
Aaron Cooper
Take a chill pill, you're being just as hysterical like the stereotypical women you love to bitch and moan about.
Henry Sullivan
It reminds white people of how primitive dark skins are and gives them racist thoughts, so that must the truth
Andrew Phillips
bua bua bua bua Bua Bua Bua Bua BUA BUA BUA BUA B U A B U A B U A B U A
here at midnight's edge we bring you all the latest star trek news
Levi Turner
Bitch wouldn't say that shit if she was trying to get the role. They all talk shit after they get paid
Michael Hill
Thanks for the insight, Internet tough guy.
Julian Gomez
Had this retarded bitch said this twenty five years ago her dumb ass would have not been apart of Star Trek. But now that kike wood has gone full on Cultural Marxist everyone's revealing themselves. Which I love because going forward it's good to know who your enemies are when the tone shifts. And the tone's going to shift. When enough billions evaporates and the get woke go broke crowd are homeless or otherwise destitute, the tone's going to swing like an axe pendulum.
Ian Wilson
>Used to have an objective, concise definition >Now it basically means anything that challenges female authority in our culture
This is how words lose all meaning. Misogyny doesn't mean anything at all anymore. Women scream it every time men raise a voice to their obvious sabotage of innocent men in order to promote themselves.
Brody Campbell
Roddenberry was a creepy horny pest, a major MeToo case if he were still alive.
