A lot of martial artists aren’t genuine fighters. There are ton of videos coming out of China now of martial artists fighting professional fighters who have long records of fighting and getting knocked out almost instantly.

No one really knows the full extent of Bruce Lee’s capabilities or what he could have done in a fight. His legend certainly outpaces how he would have actually performed, as if he had any genuine fighting experience it was probably very minimal.

In America, we didn't have full contact kickboxing until 1970 or so when Joe Lewis (Bruce's training partner/student) started it. There was boxing and wrestling of course, but other martial arts competitions were mostly point-based fights back then like the kind Chuck Norris did. I wouldn't say nobody was blending arts together, because plenty of people were back then (including Chuck and other top Karate fighters at the time), but Bruce advocated heavily for it and helped change people's approach.

Norris was a beast. Straight coming home from Korea, he was a black belt in Tang Soo Do and Judo, which means he dominated the Long range (kicks) and the stand up and ground fighting range. Then he was sent to get special MP training for a couple months which included Jujutsu and knife fighting (it included Karate but he took over teaching that part).

Later after his initial success in tournaments he took to cross training so as not to be just a kicker. He learned Shotokan Karate from Nishiyama and Tak Kubota, he learned Shito Ryu Karate from Fumio Demura, Jujitsu from a guy called Al Thomas, Hapkido from a Korean master, Kenpo from Ed Parker and old school Taekwondo from his friends in Texas Allen Steen and Skipper Mullins. Finally, he learned Boxing, wrestling and further Judo from Gene LeBell.
This was all before he ever met Bruce Lee. Afterward, he was one of the first to go out and learn Brazilian Jujitsu way before the 90's from the Machado bros.

I know what you're getting at, but I think they're smarter than you give them credit for. Even Tyson who people love to mock isn't nearly as dumb as people act (his voice plays a big part in that).

Besides that I agree with what you're saying. Lee wasn't a professional fighter, but was legitimately great as a martial artist and movie star. Nothing wrong with that, he excelled at what he set out to do. Lee discussions online tend to be too extreme. On one side you have fanboys that believe every myth about him, and on the other you have people acting like he was some McDojo phony. Neither is true.

Inspired as an influential person, sure. I did called him the most influential martial artist ever, which he is. He just wasn't a fighter, and acknowledging that fact is not an insult, except for idiotic fanboys who wank off to Bruce.

Exactly. And it's not that Bruce couldn't have been a fighter. He had the drive and determination, he could've worked up to being champion of the world, he just had his goals set in being a movie star, which he accomplished in spades.

You fail to recognize the most important aspect. Bruce Lee was an amazing human being. His single greatest wish was to become a star in Hollywood and "make more money than Steve McQueen." He accomplished this when not just Hollywood but even society was openly racist to Chinese.

Not only that, he was friends and a teach to Steve McQueen, which is pretty damn cool in my book.

I personally could care less that he never fought professionally. In fact, I think that sport was beneath him. But Bruce was and is a tremendous source of inspiration to people all over the world.

Right. Bruce wrote down everything down and youre 100% about his goals. He called it "My Chief Definite Aim"..and he not only accomplished it, he shattered it. He used martial arts as a way of discovering what he was capable of and he accomplished most of what he did in Hollywood by being himself.
