not exactly. once they had the renders they were locked in. they couldn't go back and re-film the entire movie without a moron in mocap gear or do a top-down redesign of that face. all they could hope to do was mitigate how utterly fucked they were. The whole "fug da h8rs :DDDD" thing was just their only recourse. Making the CGI more realistic would've worsened the uncanny valley effect, so they tried to make it less realistic.
