Jesus was just another over the top character in a movie full of over the top characters. If there was only two or three crazy characters and everyone else was normal, then the movie wouldnt be believable. With all of the characters in the film exagerated charactures then nobody was out of place and the world building was complete.
The only exception was donny, and he died. He didn't fit in.
