It's not contrarian, Tuco is just a typical obnoxious Jewish parasitic rodent, just like Ratso in Midnight Cowboy, that alone shits over the movie. Volonté on the other hand was great as El Indio, he made the movie better, he added poignancy to the movie whereas Wallach just added shitty humour.
