The Beach Boys' drummer was a personal friend of Manson and basically introduced Manson into the circles of fame of Hollywood in the 60's including the people Manson would later order to be murdered.

I didn't know anything besides the bare basics about Manson, saw OUATIH and didn't really understand it as much as I could have
watched Helter Skelter this morning then went and saw OUATIH again, and got more out of it. Made Sadie's death a lot more satisfying after learning about what a psycho she was.
