The Japanese do well with what they have but they have way too many disadvantages. Samurai have pretty much zero weapons that will be able to do anything except minor blunt damage to plate armor. They dont even have many effective bludgeoning weapons so concussion wont be likely.

You don't need a knight. Random ass Portuguese sailors with rapiers were enough to kill so many Samurai in the 1500s that they had to ban dueling at European ports of entry.

Samurai had zero idea how to deal with a thrust-based sword.

War is not exactly the same affair as the best fighter between 2 cultures - knights could be fooled by terrain, use of specific weapons, mobile enemies and whatnot.
But the plate amor, not even the best kind of it like the one in the pic, was impossibly hard, barring trained or lucky shot.

During the Japanese invasions of Korea they fielded 200k armies twice. 1/4 of their soldiers were armed with muskets.

At the same time 20k was a gigantic army in Europe. Spanish Armada had 17k soldiers and that was considered enough to conquer entire England if they manage to land.

Yes, European knight armor was superior to Samurai armor overall, but even in Europe it was later abandoned and replaced by armor similar to what Samurai used. Less protection but at the same time less weight and far less moving parts.

The most advanced and effective cavalry in Europe's history were the Hussars and their armor is so similar to Samurai armor it's uncanny.
