What was the Riddle of Steel all about?

Will. Riddle of Steel is about Will. What's stronger, the flesh of men or his steel. Neither. Will is the Strongest. At the beginning of Conan The Barbarian, Conan's father tells him the answer is a sword because all will fail you except your Sword. But, Conan's mother had her sword and all the good it do for her when Thulsa doom placed her under a spell.
Fast Forward to the movie's triumphant battle, Conan was just saved by Valeria who clawed her way out of the pit of hell to save him. She was both dead and didn't have a weapon to speak of, but her Will become as a sword and she protected her True Love!
Rexor's[Conan's daddy's) sword was broken, so obviously Steel, although occasionally reliable, isn't Strongest.
We see Conan confront Thulsa Doom and at this point he had bested, albeit with trickery and the aide of a ghost, both Thorgrim and Rexor, men who were easily stronger than he was one on one. So Conan was literally Stronger than anyone there, by far. His sword, The Steel, was thousands of years old, as Old as Thulsa Doom. It was so potently made that it broke Conan's father's sword. But, if memory serves, Conan held in his hand also the broken sword, his father's sword because I think he began to realize the Answer to Crom's Riddle. For neither Steel nor Flesh is at all strong for either can be set only so resilient. But Will, Will enabled his dead love to literally fight her way from the land of the dead back to the land of the living and save her True Love's life.
Finally, As Conan Stood there with Thulsa and Thulsa began to use the charm of the snake on him Conan's arm lowered and in that moment both broken Sword and muscle was as nothing. But Conan's will that was forged in fire and darkness was so refined that he willed himself through Thulsa's spell and removed that FAGGOT'S HEAD! Will of Fire and Darkness is the only answer!

Conan's father tells him Steel is the strongest. Thulsa Doom tells him Flesh is the strongest. Conan learns that Will is actually the strongest and controls both Steel and Flesh.

It also has a critique of the subcultures of the 60’s and 70’s, where spiritually starving people joined up with cults to be part of the collective and feel like they have a purpose (hence the snake cult of Doom). Conan is supposed to represent that we really should be saying “fuck it”, and making our way through the world relying on our own strength, and the strength taken from friends and loved ones (rather than letting your life being dictated by others)

Funnily enough, the thesis/antithesis theme of the riddle of steel comes from Marxist philosophy, though Milius was famously very right wing. There are lots of other points of debate in the film, the opening Nietzsche quote and the one from Genghis Khan. Some things are not explicitly stated, like the slave master setting Conan free for an unknown reason.

Conan's father believed a man could only be as strong as his sword but was killed by Thulsa's minions.

Thulsa believed flesh was stronger than steel but was killed by Conan's father's sword.

Conan solved the riddle of steel by holding both steel (the sword) and flesh (Thulsa's head) at the end. If you can find a copy of the script it directly says this, and explains the symbolism of a lot of other moments too.

I thought they said it was because Conan had no one else who would fight him (and make the master a ton of money), but apparently there’s a whole backstory about how the wheel of pain is basically part tool/part test to create the perfect warrior out of natural selection. Then they get taken to the Gladiator pits to awaken their killing instinct and shot, before being sent to the Eastern lords for training.
