Pain and suffering. At first it feels like you finally belong somewhere. A weight lifted off your shoulders because you know someone, somewhere is thinking about you. Every action you take has more meaning, because it not only affects yourself, it affects your significant other.
Over time, that feeling fades. She doesn't seem to appreciate you as much anymore. The emotional fulfillment she gave you, the affection, it all seems to have disappeared. She starts to speak up more about your shortcomings and starts mentioning other guys more as well. "Oh Greg was so funny today". When you spend time together, she doesn't say much anymore, she doesn't hang onto your every word anymore, and is content to let the conversation die so she can just watch the show she picked for the two of you to watch.
You know the relationship is already over but you hold onto it. Because while you're with her, you can at least still pretend like you still belong. But once you go to bed, if sleep doesn't come to you fast enough, you feel the familiar emptiness returning. But at least you have your memories.
