And they kinda liked Chace Crawford for that. But of course they weren't going to get rid of a relevant black character, so they had to put a black actor in another role.

The comic was a lot more about corporate conspiracy and espionage with Stillwell being the main player while Homelander is just a product to be pushed until he eventually grows out of control and stages a coup, but here he's the one doing everything behind Stillwell's back and most of the heroes aren't even all that bad. It was a show made so Seth Rogen and his cousins could sniff their own farts and that's about it.

Season 2 was already ordered before S1 even released, so they probably have a longer story going on.
I suspect that Homelander is going to run for president in S2, rather than the superhero coup he attempts at the end of the comic series. Black Noir probably isn't the same in his TV version, since he wasn't so strong seeming when he fought The Female, and he served as comic relief in a few scenes, as well as not constantly being seen lurking around in Homelander scenes)

The TV show took it as superheroes as Brand, in a disney/marvel/et al. satire.

It's about Homelander's conspiracy, not Stillwell, not the corporation, not the government, just Homelander. It went from a realistic take on how various interest groups would control and use superheroes to Homelander alone being the criminal mastermind supervillain and that's it.

It sounds exactly like the comic, which itself is nothing more than a circuitous ripoff of Marshal Law.

Superheroes are a brand in the comic too, it's very layered, every aspect of that in the show is directly taken from the comic including all the endorsements and Starlight's first meeting of the Seven being them arguing about why Homelander and Maeve get a higher percentage of their merchandise sales. You look beneath that layer you see the defence contracts Vought want and the measures they're taking to secure it. You look beneath that layer you see the CIA opposition and political figures (like Vic the Veep and his people) involved. You look beneath that layer you see what's really happening with the G-Men, Herogasm, etc. You look beneath that layer you see the core struggle with Homelander and Stillwell. The show is just brand then Homelander-is-evil and that's it.

This is not at all complicated for an adult to understand. All told it's not that bad a show (or comic), it's just that the hyper-cynical realist treatment of comic books is way fucking played-out. It was already dead by the late Eighties within the medium. There's a certain paradox in it being dredged up for film and TV as some kind of satire of the MCU/DCU films but probably none of you is smart enough to grasp that. He blows up Translucent, meets Mesmer who then gets killed by Billy, A-train threatens to paste him and his dad, he blackmails Ezekial for banging boys and praying the gay away, and in all his interactions with Annie about supes she’s talking about how terrible they are. Butcher puts two 50 caliber rounds into his girlfriend and he walks away from her completely unconcerned. I really never got the sense he was wrestling with anything. He never interacts with Maeve, Deep, or gets exposed to any of the sympathetic sides of heroes besides Annie. If that’s what they were going for I get it, but they coulda wrote it better.

And yes of course the Supes are invincible because the Boys don't their serum. But the point of the book Boys was to keep the Supes in line, knock them down a peg or two, not to kill them simply because of the huge fallout. Killing Supes is like killing A-list actors.
