I’ve taken ‘elite’ writing workshops before and attended a top MFA school for a semester before dropping out. this is 100% true and actually applies to most humanities faculties nowadays. 90% female, most of whom are brain dead children with zero capacity to understand literature, art, philosophy, etc. of that small group of males, 5% are unbearable gays who, while more capable than the females, are fucking annoying. in the remaining 5% you get a couple of soys, and finally one or two ‘normal’ guys if you’re lucky

needless to say, no insightful discussion or writing is accomplished in these sorts of environments

You do realize they will have a “whitey oppresses blackies” storyline, right? That’s what literally happens under Ar-Pharazon’s rule after Sauron becomes his right hand: the numenoreans enslaved the Harad niggers and used them as sacrifice in their Melkor cult.

Why would either of you hope for this? You say like the books, but the books weren't particularly local to any real aesthetic. It was, at the end of the day, still a very fantastic set of novels. There will be not historically accurate armor or weapons just like they weren't in the book, but history never came into it.

They described weapons and armor in the book, yes, but the descriptions aren't what you're making them out to be. Instead you seem to be using your own hopes and bias to color the descriptions into meaning what you want, rather than the generic descriptions used to ignite the reader's imagination into seeing 'what they want' which is a typical trick in writing. Less effort on the writer when the reader's brain does the work for them.

As such there should be no expectation of aesthetic here.

The Hobbit was shit because it was a complete mismanagement.
Guillermo del Toro wanted to make it very different from the LOTR trilogy, focusing more on fantasy instead of it being "epic".
Not to mention he knew that there wasn't enough material for an entire trilogy, and wanted it to be just two movies.

When execs realized this, they kicked him out, forced the LOTR team to put something together in little time, scrapping all what Del Toro made and we got what we got.
