He actually would have been fine if the weather was a little colder and didn't flood out the area he was planning on crossing to get back to civilization. There was a way to get over the water but it wasn't marked on his map and was like some unofficial hunter crossing.
He also didn't know that eating certain seeds on an empty stomach would poison him. They are edible, but the books he had failed to mention that eating them without any other food would lead to a buildup of toxic chemicals.
By the time the starvation and poisoning kicked in he was too weak to make it to the other crossing, and couldn't cross the river where he was.

On one hand, I get that you need to prove that you would have been able to survive in the harsh conditions as well as your ancestors.
